That was a community that has passed away. What they earned is theirs, and what you have earned is yours; and you will not be questioned about what they used to do.
After recalling Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his children, the Qur’an draws a very clear boundary:
“That was a community that has passed away.”
Pride in those who came before us cannot take the place of what we do today, just as their wrongs are not charged to the next generation.
“What they earned is theirs, and what you have earned is yours.”
Each generation has the outcome of its own actions. Being related to Abraham, Jacob, or any other righteous person does not make righteousness hereditary; nor is a person responsible for the deeds of their ancestors.
“And you will not be questioned about what they used to do.”
This verse rejects both inherited glory and inherited guilt. The past is worth knowing and learning from, but on the Day of Reckoning, each person will face what they themselves have done.
The lesson for us is simple: neither the greatness of our ancestors saves us nor their mistakes condemn us. The central question is not who our forefathers were, but what we have earned and how we ourselves have lived.
