In the name of The God, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Yusuf 12:1
ۚ
Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the signs of the clear Book.
Yusuf 12:2
We sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an so that you may reason.
Yusuf 12:3
We recount to you the best of narratives by revealing this Qur’an to you, though before it you were among the unaware.
Yusuf 12:4
When Joseph said to his father, “My father, I saw eleven stars, the sun, and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.”
Yusuf 12:5
ۖ
He said, “My son, do not recount your dream to your brothers, lest they devise a scheme against you. Satan is a clear enemy to the human being.
Yusuf 12:6
ۚ
Thus your Lord will choose you, teach you something of the interpretation of accounts, and complete His favor upon you and the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your two forefathers, Abraham and Isaac, before. Your Lord is Knowing, Wise.”
Yusuf 12:7
In Joseph and his brothers were signs for those who ask.
Yusuf 12:8
When they said, “Joseph and his brother are dearer to our father than we are, though we are a strong group. Our father is in clear error.
Yusuf 12:9
Kill Joseph or cast him into a land, so that your father’s attention may be yours alone, and afterward you may become righteous people.”
Yusuf 12:10
One of them said, “Do not kill Joseph. Throw him into the hidden depths of the well, and some travelers will pick him up, if you are going to act.”
Yusuf 12:11
They said, “Our father, why do you not trust us with Joseph? We are his well-wishers.
Yusuf 12:12
Send him with us tomorrow to enjoy himself and play. We will guard him.”
Yusuf 12:13
He said, “It grieves me that you should take him away, and I fear that the wolf may eat him while you are heedless of him.”
Yusuf 12:14
They said, “If the wolf eats him while we are a strong group, we would indeed be losers.”
Yusuf 12:15
ۚ
When they took him away and agreed to put him into the hidden depths of the well, We revealed to him, “You will surely inform them of this deed of theirs while they are unaware.”
Yusuf 12:16
They came to their father in the evening, weeping.
Yusuf 12:17
ۖ
They said, “Our father, we went racing and left Joseph by our belongings, and the wolf ate him. You will not believe us, even if we are truthful.”
Yusuf 12:18
ۚ ۖ ۖ
They brought false blood upon his shirt. He said, “Rather, your souls have made a deed seem fair to you. So, beautiful patience. The God is the One whose help is sought against what you describe.”
Yusuf 12:19
ۖ ۚ ۚ
A caravan came and sent its water-drawer, who lowered his bucket. He said, “Good news! Here is a boy.” They concealed him as merchandise. The God knows what they do.
Yusuf 12:20
They sold him for a low price, a few counted dirhams, having little interest in him.
Yusuf 12:21
ۚ ۚ
The man from Egypt who bought him said to his wife, “Give him an honorable lodging. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we may take him as a son.” Thus We established Joseph in the land, and so that We might teach him something of the interpretation of accounts. The God prevails over His affair, but most people do not know.
Yusuf 12:22
ۚ
When he reached maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. Thus We reward those who do good.
Yusuf 12:23
ۚ ۖ ۖ
The woman in whose house he was sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, “Come.” He said, “Refuge in The God! He is my lord; he has made my lodging good. The unjust do not succeed.”
Yusuf 12:24
ۖ ۚ ۚ
She desired him, and he would have desired her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. Thus, that We might turn evil and indecency away from him. He was among Our purified servants.
Yusuf 12:25
ۚ
They raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind. They found her husband at the door. She said, “What is the recompense of one who intended evil toward your family, except imprisonment or a painful punishment?”
Yusuf 12:26
ۚ
He said, “She sought to seduce me.” A witness from her family testified: “If his shirt is torn from the front, she has spoken the truth and he is among the liars.
Yusuf 12:27
But if his shirt is torn from behind, she has lied and he is among the truthful.”
Yusuf 12:28
ۖ
When he saw his shirt torn from behind, he said, “This is of your women’s scheming. Your scheming is great.
Yusuf 12:29
ۚ ۖ
Joseph, turn away from this. And you, ask forgiveness for your sin; you have been among those at fault.”
Yusuf 12:30
ۖ ۖ
Women in the city said, “The wife of the Aziz seeks to seduce her young man. Love has pierced her heart. We see her in clear error.”
Yusuf 12:31
ۖ
When she heard of their scheming, she sent for them, prepared a reclining place for them, gave each one a knife, and said, “Come out before them.” When they saw him, they marveled at him and cut their hands, saying, “Glory to The God! This is no human; this is only a noble angel.”
Yusuf 12:32
ۖ ۖ
She said, “This is the one about whom you blamed me. I did seek to seduce him, but he held himself back. If he does not do what I command him, he will surely be imprisoned and be among the humbled.”
Yusuf 12:33
ۖ
He said, “My Lord, prison is dearer to me than what they call me to. Unless You turn their scheming away from me, I will incline toward them and be among the ignorant.”
Yusuf 12:34
ۚ
His Lord answered him and turned their scheming away from him. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Yusuf 12:35
Then, after they had seen the signs, it seemed good to them to imprison him for a time.
Yusuf 12:36
ۖ ۖ ۖ ۖ
Two young men entered prison with him. One said, “I see myself pressing wine.” The other said, “I see myself carrying bread upon my head, from which birds eat. Tell us its interpretation. We see you among those who do good.”
Yusuf 12:37
ۚ ۚ
He said, “No food provided for you will come to you without my telling you its interpretation before it reaches you. That is among what my Lord has taught me. I have left the way of a people who do not believe in The God and who disbelieve in the Hereafter.
Yusuf 12:38
ۚ ۚ
I have followed the way of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is not for us to associate anything with The God. That is of the bounty of The God upon us and upon people, but most people do not give thanks.
Yusuf 12:39
My two prison companions, are scattered lords better, or The God, the One, the Overpowering?
Yusuf 12:40
ۚ ۚ ۚ
You worship apart from Him only names that you and your fathers have named, for which The God has sent down no authority. Judgment belongs only to The God. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the upright religion, but most people do not know.
Yusuf 12:41
ۖ ۚ
My two prison companions, one of you will serve wine to his lord; the other will be crucified, and birds will eat from his head. The affair about which you seek an answer has been decided.”
Yusuf 12:42
He said to the one he thought would be saved of the two, “Mention me to your lord.” But Satan made him forget the mention to his lord, so he remained in prison for several years.
Yusuf 12:43
ۖ
The king said, “I see seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain and others dry. Chiefs, give me an answer about my dream, if you interpret dreams.”
Yusuf 12:44
ۖ
They said, “Confused dreams. We do not know the interpretation of dreams.”
Yusuf 12:45
The one of the two who had been saved, remembering after a time, said, “I will tell you its interpretation. Send me.”
Yusuf 12:46
“Joseph, truthful one, give us an answer about seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain and others dry, so that I may return to the people, that they may know.”
Yusuf 12:47
He said, “You will sow for seven years steadily. Leave what you harvest in its ear, except a little of what you eat.
Yusuf 12:48
Then seven hard years will come after that, consuming what you have stored for them, except a little that you preserve.
Yusuf 12:49
Then a year will come after that in which people will receive relief and in which they will press.”
Yusuf 12:50
ۖ ۚ
The king said, “Bring him to me.” When the messenger came to him, he said, “Return to your lord and ask him about the women who cut their hands. My Lord knows their scheming.”
Yusuf 12:51
ۚ ۚ
He said, “What was your affair when you sought to seduce Joseph?” They said, “Glory to The God! We know no evil of him.” The wife of the Aziz said, “Now the truth has become clear. I sought to seduce him, and he is among the truthful.”
Yusuf 12:52
That is so he may know that I did not betray him in his absence, and that The God does not guide the scheming of the treacherous.
Yusuf 12:53
ۚ ۚ
I do not absolve my own soul. The soul persistently commands evil, except as my Lord has mercy. My Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
Yusuf 12:54
ۖ
The king said, “Bring him to me; I will reserve him for myself.” When he spoke with him, he said, “Today you are established and trusted with us.”
Yusuf 12:55
ۖ
He said, “Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. I am a knowledgeable guardian.”
Yusuf 12:56
ۚ ۖ
Thus We established Joseph in the land, settling wherever he wished. We bestow Our mercy upon whomever We will, and We do not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.
Yusuf 12:57
The reward of the Hereafter is better for those who believe and are mindful.
Yusuf 12:58
Joseph’s brothers came and entered before him. He recognized them, while they did not recognize him.
Yusuf 12:59
ۚ
When he had supplied them with their provisions, he said, “Bring me a brother of yours from your father. Do you not see that I give full measure and am the best of hosts?
Yusuf 12:60
If you do not bring him to me, you will have no measure from me, and do not approach me.”
Yusuf 12:61
They said, “We will seek to persuade his father about him. We will surely do it.”
Yusuf 12:62
He said to his young men, “Put their merchandise into their baggage, so that they may recognize it when they return to their family, and perhaps come back.”
Yusuf 12:63
When they returned to their father, they said, “Our father, the measure has been withheld from us. Send our brother with us so that we may obtain the measure. We will guard him.”
Yusuf 12:64
ۖ ۖ
He said, “Shall I trust you with him except as I trusted you with his brother before? The God is the best guardian, and He is the most merciful of the merciful.”
Yusuf 12:65
ۖ ۖ ۖ ۖ
When they opened their belongings, they found their merchandise returned to them. They said, “Our father, what more do we seek? Here is our merchandise, returned to us. We will bring provisions for our family, guard our brother, and obtain an extra camel-load. That is an easy measure.”
Yusuf 12:66
ۖ
He said, “I will not send him with you until you give me a pledge by The God that you will bring him back to me, unless you are surrounded.” When they gave him their pledge, he said, “The God is trustee over what we say.”
Yusuf 12:67
ۖ ۖ ۖ ۖ
He said, “My sons, do not enter through one gate, but enter through separate gates. I cannot avail you anything against The God. Judgment belongs only to The God. On Him I have relied, and on Him let those who rely place their trust.”
Yusuf 12:68
ۚ
When they entered as their father had commanded, it could not avail them anything against The God, except that it fulfilled a need in Jacob’s soul. He possessed knowledge from what We had taught him, but most people do not know.
Yusuf 12:69
ۖ
When they entered before Joseph, he took his brother close to him. He said, “I am your brother. Do not grieve over what they used to do.”
Yusuf 12:70
When he had supplied them with their provisions, he placed the drinking cup in his brother’s baggage. Then a caller called out, “Caravan, you are thieves!”
Yusuf 12:71
They turned toward them and said, “What are you missing?”
Yusuf 12:72
They said, “We are missing the king’s cup. Whoever brings it will have a camel-load, and I guarantee it.”
Yusuf 12:73
They said, “By The God, you know we did not come to spread corruption in the land, and we are not thieves.”
Yusuf 12:74
They said, “What is its penalty, then, if you are liars?”
Yusuf 12:75
ۚ
They said, “Its penalty is the one in whose baggage it is found; he himself is its penalty. Thus we recompense the unjust.”
Yusuf 12:76
ۚ ۖ ۚ ۗ
He began with their containers before his brother’s container, then brought it out of his brother’s container. Thus We planned for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother under the king’s law unless The God willed. We raise in degrees whomever We will, and above every possessor of knowledge is one who knows.
Yusuf 12:77
ۚ ۚ ۖ
They said, “If he steals, a brother of his stole before.” Joseph kept it within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, “You are worse in position, and The God knows best what you describe.”
Yusuf 12:78
ۖ
They said, “Aziz, he has an elderly father. Take one of us in his place. We see you among those who do good.”
Yusuf 12:79
He said, “Refuge in The God, that we should take anyone except the one with whom we found our belongings. Then we would be unjust.”
Yusuf 12:80
ۖ ۖ ۖ
When they despaired of him, they withdrew to confer privately. Their eldest said, “Do you not know that your father took a pledge from you by The God, and that before this you failed concerning Joseph? I will not leave this land until my father permits me or The God judges for me. He is the best of judges.
Yusuf 12:81
Return to your father and say, ‘Our father, your son stole. We testify only to what we know, and we were not guardians of the unseen.
Yusuf 12:82
ۖ
Ask the town where we were and the caravan with which we came. We are truthful.’”
Yusuf 12:83
ۖ ۖ ۚ
He said, “Rather, your souls have made a deed seem fair to you. So, beautiful patience. Perhaps The God will bring them all to me. He is the Knowing, the Wise.”
Yusuf 12:84
He turned away from them and said, “Alas for Joseph!” His eyes turned white from grief, and he held his sorrow within.
Yusuf 12:85
They said, “By The God, you will keep remembering Joseph until you waste away or perish.”
Yusuf 12:86
He said, “I complain of my anguish and grief only to The God, and I know from The God what you do not know.
Yusuf 12:87
ۖ
My sons, go and seek news of Joseph and his brother, and do not despair of relief from The God. None despair of relief from The God except the disbelieving people.”
Yusuf 12:88
ۖ
When they entered before him, they said, “Aziz, hardship has touched us and our family, and we have brought scant merchandise. Give us full measure and give us charity. The God rewards those who give charity.”
Yusuf 12:89
He said, “Do you know what you did to Joseph and his brother when you were ignorant?”
Yusuf 12:90
ۖ ۖ ۖ
They said, “Are you indeed Joseph?” He said, “I am Joseph, and this is my brother. The God has favored us. Whoever is mindful and patient—The God does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.”
Yusuf 12:91
They said, “By The God, He has preferred you over us, and we were at fault.”
Yusuf 12:92
ۖ ۖ
He said, “There is no reproach upon you today. May The God forgive you. He is the most merciful of the merciful.
Yusuf 12:93
Take this shirt of mine and cast it upon my father’s face; he will become seeing. Bring all your family to me.”
Yusuf 12:94
ۖ
When the caravan departed, their father said, “I perceive the scent of Joseph, if you do not consider me senile.”
Yusuf 12:95
They said, “By The God, you are in your old error.”
Yusuf 12:96
ۖ
When the bearer of good news came, he cast it upon his face, and he regained his sight. He said, “Did I not tell you that I know from The God what you do not know?”
Yusuf 12:97
They said, “Our father, ask forgiveness for our sins. We were at fault.”
Yusuf 12:98
ۖ
He said, “I will ask my Lord to forgive you. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
Yusuf 12:99
When they entered before Joseph, he took his parents close to him and said, “Enter Egypt, if The God wills, in safety.”
Yusuf 12:100
ۖ ۖ ۚ ۚ
He raised his parents upon the throne, and they fell in prostration to him. He said, “My father, this is the fulfillment of my earlier dream. My Lord has made it true. He was good to me when He brought me out of prison and brought you from the desert after Satan stirred discord between me and my brothers. My Lord is subtle in what He wills. He is the Knowing, the Wise.
Yusuf 12:101
ۚ ۖ
My Lord, You have given me something of sovereignty and taught me something of the interpretation of accounts. Originator of the heavens and the earth, You are my protector in this world and the Hereafter. Take me in death submitting, and join me with the righteous.”
Yusuf 12:102
ۖ
These are tidings of the unseen that We reveal to you. You were not with them when they agreed upon their affair and were scheming.
Yusuf 12:103
Most people will not believe, however eagerly you desire it.
Yusuf 12:104
ۚ
You ask them for no reward for it. It is only a reminder for the worlds.
Yusuf 12:105
How many a sign in the heavens and the earth they pass by, turning away from it.
Yusuf 12:106
Most of them do not believe in The God without associating partners.
Yusuf 12:107
Do they feel secure from an enveloping punishment of The God coming upon them, or the Hour coming upon them suddenly while they are unaware?
Yusuf 12:108
ۚ ۖ
Say, “This is my way. I call to The God with insight, I and whoever follows me. Glory be to The God; I am not among those who associate partners.”
Yusuf 12:109
ۗ ۗ ۗ
Before you, We sent only men from the people of the towns, to whom We revealed. Have they not traveled through the land and seen how those before them ended? The abode of the Hereafter is better for those who are mindful. Will you not reason?
Yusuf 12:110
ۖ
Until, when the messengers despaired and thought they had been lied to, Our help came to them, and whomever We willed was saved. Our might is not turned back from the guilty people.
Yusuf 12:111
ۗ
In their narratives is a lesson for people of understanding. It is no fabricated account, but a confirmation of what is before it, a detailed exposition of all things, and guidance and mercy for people who believe.
