·The Stories·88 Verses

In the name of The God, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Al-Qasas 28:1

Ta, Sin, Mim.

Al-Qasas 28:2

These are the verses of the clarifying Book.

Al-Qasas 28:3

We recite to you some of the account of Moses and Pharaoh in truth, for people who believe.

Al-Qasas 28:4

ۚ

Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and divided its people into factions, weakening a group of them, slaughtering their sons and keeping their women alive. He was among the corrupters.

Al-Qasas 28:5

And We wished to favor those who had been weakened in the land, to make them leaders and inheritors,

Al-Qasas 28:6

To establish them in the land, and show Pharaoh, Haman, and their soldiers through them what they feared.

Al-Qasas 28:7

ۖ ۖ

We revealed to Moses’ mother: Nurse him; then, when you fear for him, cast him into the water. Do not fear or grieve. We will return him to you and make him one of the messengers.

Al-Qasas 28:8

ۗ

Pharaoh’s household picked him up, so that he would become an enemy and a sorrow to them. Pharaoh, Haman, and their soldiers were wrongdoers.

Al-Qasas 28:9

ۖ

Pharaoh’s wife said: A delight to the eye for me and you. Do not kill him; perhaps he will benefit us, or we may take him as a son. And they were unaware.

Al-Qasas 28:10

ۖ

Moses’ mother’s heart became empty. She almost disclosed him, had We not strengthened her heart so that she would be among the believers.

Al-Qasas 28:11

ۖ

She said to his sister: Follow him. So she watched him from a distance while they were unaware.

Al-Qasas 28:12

We had already barred wet nurses from him. So she said: Shall I direct you to a household who will care for him for you and be sincere toward him?

Al-Qasas 28:13

We returned him to his mother so that her eye might be comforted, that she might not grieve, and that she might know that The God’s promise is true. But most of them do not know.

Al-Qasas 28:14

ۚ

When he reached his full strength and maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge. Thus We reward those who do good.

Al-Qasas 28:15

ۖ ۖ ۖ

He entered the city at a time when its people were unaware and found two men fighting, one from his own faction and the other from his enemies. The one from his faction sought his help against his enemy, so Moses struck him with his fist and killed him. He said: This is from Satan’s work. He is a clear, misleading enemy.

Al-Qasas 28:16

ۚ

He said: My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me. And He forgave him. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Al-Qasas 28:17

He said: My Lord, because of the favor You have bestowed upon me, I will never be a supporter of the guilty.

Al-Qasas 28:18

ۚ

He was in the city, fearful and watchful, when the one who had sought his help the day before cried out to him. Moses said to him: You are clearly astray.

Al-Qasas 28:19

ۖ

When he wanted to seize the one who was an enemy to them both, he said: Moses, do you want to kill me as you killed a person yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land, and do not want to be one of those who set things right.

Al-Qasas 28:20

A man came hurrying from the farthest part of the city and said: Moses, the chiefs are consulting about you to kill you. So leave; I am a sincere adviser to you.

Al-Qasas 28:21

ۖ

He left it, fearful and watchful. He said: My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people.

Al-Qasas 28:22

When he turned toward Midian, he said: Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the right way.

Al-Qasas 28:23

ۖ ۖ ۖ

When he reached the water of Midian, he found a group of people watering, and apart from them two women holding back. He said: What is your situation? They said: We do not water until the shepherds depart, and our father is an elderly man.

Al-Qasas 28:24

So he watered for them, then turned back to the shade and said: My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.

Al-Qasas 28:25

ۚ ۖ

Then one of the two came to him, walking modestly. She said: My father calls you to reward you for watering for us. When he came to him and recounted the story, he said: Do not fear. You have escaped the wrongdoing people.

Al-Qasas 28:26

ۖ

One of the two said: My father, hire him. The best one you can hire is the strong, trustworthy one.

Al-Qasas 28:27

ۖ ۖ ۚ

He said: I wish to marry one of these two daughters of mine to you, on condition that you work for me for eight years. If you complete ten, that is from you. I do not wish to make things hard for you. You will find me, if The God wills, among the righteous.

Al-Qasas 28:28

ۖ ۖ

He said: Let that be between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there shall be no claim against me. And The God is trustee over what we say.

Al-Qasas 28:29

When Moses completed the term and traveled with his family, he noticed a fire on the side of the mountain. He said to his family: Stay here. I have noticed a fire; perhaps I will bring you news from it or a burning ember, so that you may warm yourselves.

Al-Qasas 28:30

When he reached it, a call came from the right bank of the valley, in the blessed place, from the tree: Moses, I am The God, Lord of all worlds.

Al-Qasas 28:31

ۖ ۚ ۖ

And throw down your staff. When he saw it moving as though it were a snake, he turned and fled without returning. Moses, come forward and do not fear. You are among the secure.

Al-Qasas 28:32

ۖ ۚ

Put your hand into your garment’s opening; it will come out white without harm. And draw your wing close to yourself against fear. These are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs. They were a defiantly disobedient people.

Al-Qasas 28:33

He said: My Lord, I killed a person from among them, and I fear they will kill me.

Al-Qasas 28:34

ۖ

My brother Aaron is more eloquent in speech than I am. So send him with me as support, to confirm me. I fear they will deny me.

Al-Qasas 28:35

ۚ

He said: We will strengthen your arm through your brother and give you both authority, so they will not reach you. With Our signs, you and those who follow you will prevail.

Al-Qasas 28:36

When Moses came to them with Our clear signs, they said: This is only fabricated sorcery. We have not heard of this among our earliest fathers.

Al-Qasas 28:37

ۖ

Moses said: My Lord knows best who has brought guidance from Him and who will have the final outcome of the abode. The wrongdoers do not prosper.

Al-Qasas 28:38

Pharaoh said: Chiefs, I know of no god for you other than myself. So, Haman, fire the clay for me and build me a lofty structure, so that I may look upon Moses’ god. I think he is among the liars.

Al-Qasas 28:39

He and his soldiers behaved arrogantly in the land without right, and thought they would not be returned to Us.

Al-Qasas 28:40

ۖ

So We seized him and his soldiers and cast them into the water. See how the wrongdoers ended.

Al-Qasas 28:41

ۖ

We made them leaders calling to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.

Al-Qasas 28:42

ۖ

We made a curse follow them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be among the despised.

Al-Qasas 28:43

After We destroyed the earlier generations, We gave Moses the Book as insights for people, guidance and mercy, so that they might remember.

Al-Qasas 28:44

You were not on the western side when We entrusted the command to Moses, nor were you among the witnesses.

Al-Qasas 28:45

ۚ

But We brought forth generations, and their lifetimes grew long. You were not dwelling among the people of Midian, reciting Our signs to them, but We were sending messengers.

Al-Qasas 28:46

You were not beside the mountain when We called, but it is a mercy from your Lord, so that you may warn a people to whom no warner came before you, so that they might remember.

Al-Qasas 28:47

And lest a calamity strike them for what their hands have sent ahead, and they say: Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger, so that we could follow Your signs and be among the believers?

Al-Qasas 28:48

ۚ ۖ

When the truth came to them from Us, they said: Why has he not been given the like of what Moses was given? Did they not previously reject what Moses was given? They said: Two sorceries supporting each other. And they said: We reject both.

Al-Qasas 28:49

Say: Then bring a book from The God that guides better than these two, so that I may follow it, if you are truthful.

Al-Qasas 28:50

ۚ ۚ

If they do not answer you, know that they only follow their desires. Who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from The God? The God does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Al-Qasas 28:51

We have conveyed the word to them in succession, so that they might remember.

Al-Qasas 28:52

Those to whom We gave the Book before it believe in it.

Al-Qasas 28:53

When it is recited to them, they say: We believe in it. It is the truth from our Lord. Even before it, we were in submission.

Al-Qasas 28:54

They will receive their reward twice because they were patient, repel evil with good, and spend from what We have provided them.

Al-Qasas 28:55

When they hear idle talk, they turn away from it and say: Our deeds are ours and your deeds are yours. Peace upon you; we do not seek the ignorant.

Al-Qasas 28:56

ۚ

You do not guide whomever you love, but The God guides whom He wills, and He knows best those who are guided.

Al-Qasas 28:57

ۚ

They said: If we follow the guidance with you, we will be snatched from our land. Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary to which fruits of every kind are gathered as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.

Al-Qasas 28:58

ۖ ۖ

How many settlements We destroyed that were insolent in their livelihood. Those are their dwellings, scarcely inhabited after them. And We were the inheritors.

Al-Qasas 28:59

ۚ

Your Lord would not destroy settlements until He sent a messenger in their center to recite Our signs to them. And We would not destroy settlements unless their people were wrongdoers.

Al-Qasas 28:60

ۚ ۚ

Whatever you have been given is the enjoyment and adornment of worldly life. What is with The God is better and more lasting. Will you not use reason?

Al-Qasas 28:61

Is one to whom We have made a good promise, which he will meet, like one whom We have given the enjoyment of worldly life, then who on the Day of Resurrection is among those brought forth?

Al-Qasas 28:62

And the day He calls them and says: Where are My partners whom you used to claim?

Al-Qasas 28:63

ۖ ۖ

Those against whom the word has come true will say: Our Lord, these are the ones we led astray. We led them astray as we ourselves went astray. We disavow them before You. They were not worshipping us.

Al-Qasas 28:64

ۚ

It will be said: Call your partners. They will call them, but they will not answer them, and they will see the punishment. If only they had been guided.

Al-Qasas 28:65

And the day He calls them and says: What did you answer the messengers?

Al-Qasas 28:66

Then the accounts will be obscured to them that day, and they will not ask one another.

Al-Qasas 28:67

But whoever repents, believes, and does righteous work may be among those who prosper.

Al-Qasas 28:68

ۗ ۚ

Your Lord creates what He wills and chooses. The choice is not theirs. Glory be to The God, exalted above what they associate with Him.

Al-Qasas 28:69

Your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they reveal.

Al-Qasas 28:70

ۖ ۖ

He is The God; there is no god except Him. Praise belongs to Him in the first and the last. Judgment belongs to Him, and to Him you will be returned.

Al-Qasas 28:71

ۖ

Say: Have you considered, if The God made the night continuous for you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than The God would bring you light? Will you not hear?

Al-Qasas 28:72

ۖ

Say: Have you considered, if The God made the day continuous for you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than The God would bring you a night to rest in? Will you not see?

Al-Qasas 28:73

From His mercy, He made the night and day for you, so that you may rest in it and seek His favor, and so that you may give thanks.

Al-Qasas 28:74

And the day He calls them and says: Where are My partners whom you used to claim?

Al-Qasas 28:75

We will draw out a witness from every community and say: Bring your proof. Then they will know that the truth belongs to The God, and what they used to invent will vanish from them.

Al-Qasas 28:76

ۖ ۖ

Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he oppressed them. We had given him treasures whose keys weighed heavily upon a band of strong men. When his people said to him: Do not exult; The God does not love the exultant.

Al-Qasas 28:77

ۖ ۖ ۖ ۖ

Seek the abode of the Hereafter through what The God has given you, and do not forget your share of this world. Do good as The God has done good to you, and do not seek corruption in the earth. The God does not love the corrupters.

Al-Qasas 28:78

ۚ ۚ

He said: I was given it only because of knowledge I possess. Did he not know that The God had destroyed before him generations stronger than he and greater in accumulation? The guilty will not be questioned about their sins.

Al-Qasas 28:79

ۖ

He came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired worldly life said: If only we had the like of what Qarun has been given. He has a great share indeed.

Al-Qasas 28:80

Those who had been given knowledge said: Woe to you. The God’s reward is better for one who believes and does righteous work, and none receive it except the patient.

Al-Qasas 28:81

We made the earth swallow him and his house. He had no group to help him against The God, nor could he defend himself.

Al-Qasas 28:82

ۖ ۖ

Those who had wished for his position the day before began saying: Ah, The God expands provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts it. Had The God not favored us, He would have made the earth swallow us. Ah, the disbelievers do not prosper.

Al-Qasas 28:83

ۚ

That abode of the Hereafter We assign to those who seek neither supremacy in the earth nor corruption. And the final outcome belongs to the mindful.

Al-Qasas 28:84

ۖ

Whoever brings a good deed will have better than it. And whoever brings evil—those who did evil deeds will be repaid only for what they used to do.

Al-Qasas 28:85

ۚ

The One who ordained the Quran for you will return you to a place of return. Say: My Lord knows best who has brought guidance and who is in clear error.

Al-Qasas 28:86

ۖ

You did not expect the Book to be cast to you, except as a mercy from your Lord. So never be a supporter of the disbelievers.

Al-Qasas 28:87

ۖ ۖ

Do not let them turn you away from The God’s signs after they have been sent down to you. Call to your Lord, and never be among those who associate partners.

Al-Qasas 28:88

ۘ ۚ ۚ

Do not call upon another god alongside The God. There is no god except Him. Everything perishes except His face. Judgment belongs to Him, and to Him you will be returned.
