·Repentance·129 Verses

At-Tawbah 9:1

A declaration of release from The God and His Messenger to the associators with whom you made a treaty.

At-Tawbah 9:2

ۙ

Travel through the land for four months, and know that you cannot thwart The God and that The God will disgrace the disbelievers.

At-Tawbah 9:3

ۙ ۚ ۖ ۗ

An announcement from The God and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage: The God is free of the associators, and so is His Messenger. If you repent, it is better for you. If you turn away, know that you cannot thwart The God. Give those who disbelieve news of a painful punishment.

At-Tawbah 9:4

ۚ

Except those associators with whom you made a treaty, who then did not diminish anything due to you or support anyone against you. Fulfill their treaty with them until its term. The God loves the mindful.

At-Tawbah 9:5

ۚ ۚ

When the sacred months have passed, kill the associators wherever you find them, seize them, besiege them, and sit in wait for them at every lookout. If they repent, establish prayer, and give zakat, let them go their way. The God is Forgiving, Merciful.

At-Tawbah 9:6

ۚ

If any of the associators seeks your protection, grant him protection so that he may hear the word of The God; then convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are people who do not know.

At-Tawbah 9:7

ۖ ۚ

How can the associators have a treaty with The God and His Messenger, except those with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque? As long as they remain upright toward you, remain upright toward them. The God loves the mindful.

At-Tawbah 9:8

ۚ

How, when, if they gain the upper hand over you, they observe neither kinship nor a covenant toward you? They please you with their mouths, while their hearts refuse. Most of them are defiantly disobedient.

At-Tawbah 9:9

ۚ

They exchanged the signs of The God for a small price and barred others from His way. Evil indeed was what they did.

At-Tawbah 9:10

ۚ

They observe neither kinship nor a covenant toward a believer. They are the transgressors.

At-Tawbah 9:11

ۗ

If they repent, establish prayer, and give zakat, they are your brothers in religion. We set out the signs in detail for people who know.

At-Tawbah 9:12

ۙ

If they break their oaths after their treaty and assail your religion, fight the leaders of disbelief; their oaths are nothing, so that they may desist.

At-Tawbah 9:13

ۚ ۚ

Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths, intended to expel the Messenger, and began against you the first time? Do you fear them? The God has a greater right that you fear Him, if you are believers.

At-Tawbah 9:14

Fight them; The God will punish them by your hands, disgrace them, give you victory over them, and heal the breasts of a believing people.

At-Tawbah 9:15

ۗ ۗ

And remove the anger of their hearts. The God turns toward whomever He wills. The God is Knowing, Wise.

At-Tawbah 9:16

ۚ

Did you think you would be left alone while The God has not yet known those among you who strive and take no confidant apart from The God, His Messenger, and the believers? The God is aware of what you do.

At-Tawbah 9:17

ۚ

It is not for the associators to maintain the mosques of The God while testifying against themselves to disbelief. Their deeds have come to nothing, and in the Fire they will remain.

At-Tawbah 9:18

ۖ

Only those who believe in The God and the Last Day, establish prayer, give zakat, and fear none but The God maintain the mosques of The God. It may be that they are among the guided.

At-Tawbah 9:19

ۚ ۗ

Have you made the giving of water to pilgrims and the maintenance of the Sacred Mosque equal to one who believes in The God and the Last Day and strives in the way of The God? They are not equal with The God. The God does not guide the unjust people.

At-Tawbah 9:20

ۚ

Those who believe, migrate, and strive in the way of The God with their wealth and their lives have a greater degree with The God. They are the triumphant.

At-Tawbah 9:21

Their Lord gives them good news of mercy from Him, approval, and gardens in which they have lasting delight.

At-Tawbah 9:22

ۚ

Remaining in them forever. With The God is a great reward.

At-Tawbah 9:23

ۚ

You who believe, do not take your fathers and brothers as guardians if they prefer disbelief to faith. Whoever among you takes them as guardians—those are the unjust.

At-Tawbah 9:24

ۗ

Say, “If your fathers, sons, brothers, spouses, clan, wealth you have acquired, trade whose decline you fear, and dwellings that please you are dearer to you than The God, His Messenger, and striving in His way, then wait until The God brings His command.” The God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

At-Tawbah 9:25

ۙ ۙ

The God has helped you in many places, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number impressed you but did not avail you at all. The earth, despite its breadth, became narrow for you; then you turned your backs and retreated.

At-Tawbah 9:26

ۚ

Then The God sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers, sent down troops you did not see, and punished those who disbelieved. That is the recompense of the disbelievers.

At-Tawbah 9:27

ۗ

Then, after that, The God turns toward whomever He wills. The God is Forgiving, Merciful.

At-Tawbah 9:28

ۚ ۚ

You who believe, the associators are impure, so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year of theirs. If you fear poverty, The God will enrich you from His bounty, if He wills. The God is Knowing, Wise.

At-Tawbah 9:29

Fight those who were given the Book who do not believe in The God or the Last Day, do not forbid what The God and His Messenger have forbidden, and do not follow the religion of truth, until they give the jizyah by hand while humbled.

At-Tawbah 9:30

ۖ ۖ ۚ ۚ

The Jews said, “Ezra is the son of The God,” and the Christians said, “The Messiah is the son of The God.” That is their saying with their mouths, resembling the saying of those who disbelieved before. May The God fight them! How they are turned away!

At-Tawbah 9:31

ۖ ۚ

They took their scholars and monks as lords apart from The God, and the Messiah, son of Mary, though they were commanded only to worship one god. There is no god except Him. Glory be to Him above what they associate as partners.

At-Tawbah 9:32

They wish to extinguish the light of The God with their mouths, but The God refuses anything except to complete His light, even if the disbelievers dislike it.

At-Tawbah 9:33

He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religion, even if the associators dislike it.

At-Tawbah 9:34

ۗ

You who believe, many scholars and monks consume people’s wealth wrongfully and bar others from the way of The God. Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of The God—give them news of a painful punishment.

At-Tawbah 9:35

ۖ

On the day it is heated in the fire of Hell and their foreheads, sides, and backs are branded with it: “This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard.”

At-Tawbah 9:36

ۚ ۚ ۚ ۚ

The number of months with The God is twelve in the Book of The God, on the day He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred. That is the upright religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. Fight the associators all together, just as they fight you all together. Know that The God is with the mindful.

At-Tawbah 9:37

ۖ ۚ ۗ

Postponement is only an increase in disbelief, by which those who disbelieve are led astray. They make it lawful one year and forbidden another year to match the number of what The God has made sacred, thus making lawful what The God has forbidden. The evil of their deeds has been made fair to them. The God does not guide the disbelieving people.

At-Tawbah 9:38

ۚ ۚ

You who believe, what is the matter with you that, when you are told to go forth in the way of The God, you weigh yourselves down to the earth? Are you content with the worldly life instead of the Hereafter? The enjoyment of the worldly life compared with the Hereafter is only a little.

At-Tawbah 9:39

ۗ

If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment and replace you with another people. You will not harm Him at all. The God has power over everything.

At-Tawbah 9:40

ۖ ۗ ۗ

If you do not help him, The God already helped him when those who disbelieved expelled him, the second of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, “Do not grieve; The God is with us.” The God sent down His tranquility upon him, strengthened him with troops you did not see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest. The word of The God is the highest. The God is Mighty, Wise.

At-Tawbah 9:41

ۚ

Go forth, light and heavy, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of The God. That is better for you, if you know.

At-Tawbah 9:42

ۚ

Had it been a nearby gain and a moderate journey, they would have followed you, but the distance seemed too great to them. They will swear by The God, “Had we been able, we would have gone out with you.” They destroy themselves, and The God knows that they are liars.

At-Tawbah 9:43

The God has pardoned you. Why did you give them permission before those who spoke the truth became clear to you and you knew the liars?

At-Tawbah 9:44

ۗ

Those who believe in The God and the Last Day do not ask your permission concerning striving with their wealth and their lives. The God knows the mindful.

At-Tawbah 9:45

Only those who do not believe in The God and the Last Day ask your permission, whose hearts are in doubt, so they waver in their doubt.

At-Tawbah 9:46

Had they intended to go out, they would have made preparations for it. But The God disliked their setting out, so He held them back, and it was said, “Sit with those who sit.”

At-Tawbah 9:47

ۗ

Had they gone out among you, they would have added nothing to you but disorder and hurried about among you, seeking turmoil for you. Among you are those who listen to them. The God knows the unjust.

At-Tawbah 9:48

They had sought turmoil before and turned matters about against you, until the truth came and the command of The God prevailed, while they disliked it.

At-Tawbah 9:49

ۚ ۗ

Among them is one who says, “Give me permission and do not put me to trial.” Indeed, they have fallen into trial. Hell encompasses the disbelievers.

At-Tawbah 9:50

ۖ

If good befalls you, it distresses them. If a misfortune befalls you, they say, “We took care of our affair beforehand,” and turn away rejoicing.

At-Tawbah 9:51

ۚ

Say, “Nothing will befall us except what The God has written for us. He is our protector.” Let the believers rely on The God.

At-Tawbah 9:52

ۖ ۖ

Say, “Do you await for us anything but one of the two good outcomes? We await for you that The God will afflict you with a punishment from Him or by our hands. So wait; we are waiting with you.”

At-Tawbah 9:53

ۖ

Say, “Spend willingly or unwillingly; it will not be accepted from you. You have been a defiantly disobedient people.”

At-Tawbah 9:54

Nothing prevented their expenditures from being accepted except that they disbelieved in The God and His Messenger, come to prayer only reluctantly, and spend only unwillingly.

At-Tawbah 9:55

ۚ

Do not let their wealth or their children impress you. The God only intends to punish them through these in the worldly life and for their souls to depart while they are disbelievers.

At-Tawbah 9:56

They swear by The God that they are of you, but they are not of you. They are a people who are afraid.

At-Tawbah 9:57

If they found a refuge, caves, or a place to enter, they would turn toward it, rushing headlong.

At-Tawbah 9:58

Among them are those who criticize you concerning charities. If they are given some, they are pleased; if they are not given any, they are suddenly angry.

At-Tawbah 9:59

If only they were content with what The God and His Messenger gave them and said, “The God is sufficient for us. The God will give us from His bounty, and so will His Messenger. Toward The God we direct our desire.”

At-Tawbah 9:60

ۖ ۗ

Charities are only for the poor, the needy, those who work on them, those whose hearts are brought together, the freeing of those in bondage, debtors, the way of The God, and the traveler—a duty from The God. The God is Knowing, Wise.

At-Tawbah 9:61

ۚ ۚ

Among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say, “He is an ear.” Say, “An ear of good for you. He believes in The God, trusts the believers, and is a mercy for those among you who believe.” Those who hurt the Messenger of The God have a painful punishment.

At-Tawbah 9:62

They swear by The God to you to please you. The God and His Messenger have a greater right that they please Him, if they are believers.

At-Tawbah 9:63

ۚ

Do they not know that whoever opposes The God and His Messenger will have the fire of Hell, remaining in it? That is the great disgrace.

At-Tawbah 9:64

ۚ

The hypocrites fear that a surah will be sent down upon them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, “Mock; The God will bring out what you fear.”

At-Tawbah 9:65

ۚ

If you ask them, they will surely say, “We were only talking idly and playing.” Say, “Was it The God, His signs, and His Messenger that you were mocking?”

At-Tawbah 9:66

ۚ

Make no excuses. You have disbelieved after your faith. If We pardon a group among you, We will punish another group because they were guilty.

At-Tawbah 9:67

ۚ ۚ ۗ

The hypocritical men and women are of one another. They command what is wrong, forbid what is right, and withhold their hands. They forgot The God, so He forgot them. The hypocrites are the defiantly disobedient.

At-Tawbah 9:68

ۚ ۚ ۖ

The God has promised the hypocritical men and women and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, remaining in it. It is sufficient for them. The God has cursed them, and they have a lasting punishment.

At-Tawbah 9:69

ۚ ۖ

Like those before you, who were stronger than you and had more wealth and children. They enjoyed their share, and you enjoyed your share as those before you enjoyed theirs; you plunged into idle talk as they did. Their deeds have come to nothing in this world and the Hereafter. They are the losers.

At-Tawbah 9:70

ۚ ۖ

Has the news of those before them not reached them: the people of Noah, ‘Ad, Thamud, the people of Abraham, the people of Midian, and the overturned towns? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. The God would not wrong them; they were wronging themselves.

At-Tawbah 9:71

ۚ ۚ ۗ

The believing men and women are guardians of one another. They command what is right, forbid what is wrong, establish prayer, give zakat, and obey The God and His Messenger. The God will have mercy on them. The God is Mighty, Wise.

At-Tawbah 9:72

ۚ ۚ

The God has promised the believing men and women gardens beneath which rivers flow, remaining in them, and good dwellings in gardens of lasting residence. Approval from The God is greater. That is the great triumph.

At-Tawbah 9:73

ۚ ۖ

Prophet, strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be firm with them. Their refuge is Hell, an evil destination.

At-Tawbah 9:74

ۚ ۚ ۖ ۚ

They swear by The God that they did not say it, but they did speak the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their submission. They intended what they did not attain. They resented only that The God and His Messenger had enriched them from His bounty. If they repent, it is better for them. If they turn away, The God will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no guardian or helper on earth.

At-Tawbah 9:75

Among them are those who pledged to The God, “If He gives us from His bounty, we will surely give charity and be among the righteous.”

At-Tawbah 9:76

When He gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away in aversion.

At-Tawbah 9:77

So He caused hypocrisy to follow in their hearts until the day they meet Him, because they broke what they had promised The God and because they used to lie.

At-Tawbah 9:78

Do they not know that The God knows their secrets and their private conversations, and that The God is the Knower of unseen things?

At-Tawbah 9:79

ۙ

Those who criticize believers who give charity voluntarily, and those who find nothing beyond their effort, and mock them—The God mocks them, and they have a painful punishment.

At-Tawbah 9:80

ۚ ۗ

Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them. Even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, The God will never forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in The God and His Messenger. The God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

At-Tawbah 9:81

ۗ ۚ

Those left behind rejoiced in their staying behind the Messenger of The God and disliked striving with their wealth and their lives in the way of The God. They said, “Do not go forth in the heat.” Say, “The fire of Hell is hotter,” if only they understood.

At-Tawbah 9:82

Let them laugh a little and weep much, as recompense for what they used to earn.

At-Tawbah 9:83

ۖ

If The God returns you to a group of them and they ask your permission to go out, say, “You will never go out with me, nor will you fight an enemy alongside me. You were content to sit the first time, so sit with those who remain behind.”

At-Tawbah 9:84

ۖ

Never pray over any of them who dies, nor stand at his grave. They disbelieved in The God and His Messenger and died while defiantly disobedient.

At-Tawbah 9:85

ۚ

Do not let their wealth or their children impress you. The God only intends to punish them through these in this world and for their souls to depart while they are disbelievers.

At-Tawbah 9:86

When a surah is sent down, “Believe in The God and strive alongside His Messenger,” those of means among them ask your permission and say, “Leave us to be with those who sit.”

At-Tawbah 9:87

They were content to be with those who remain behind, and their hearts were sealed, so they do not understand.

At-Tawbah 9:88

ۚ ۖ

But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their lives. For them are good things, and they are the successful.

At-Tawbah 9:89

ۚ

The God has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, remaining in them. That is the great triumph.

At-Tawbah 9:90

ۚ

Those bringing excuses among the desert Arabs came to be given permission, while those who lied to The God and His Messenger stayed behind. A painful punishment will afflict those among them who disbelieved.

At-Tawbah 9:91

ۚ ۚ

There is no blame upon the weak, the sick, or those who find nothing to spend, if they are sincere toward The God and His Messenger. There is no way against the doers of good. The God is Forgiving, Merciful.

At-Tawbah 9:92

Nor upon those who, when they came to you for mounts, you said, “I find nothing on which to mount you.” They turned away with their eyes overflowing with tears, grieving that they could find nothing to spend.

At-Tawbah 9:93

ۚ

The way is only against those who ask your permission while they are rich. They were content to be with those who remain behind, and The God sealed their hearts, so they do not know.

At-Tawbah 9:94

ۚ ۚ

They will make excuses to you when you return to them. Say, “Make no excuses; we will not believe you. The God has informed us of your news. The God and His Messenger will see your deeds. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”

At-Tawbah 9:95

ۖ ۖ ۖ

They will swear by The God to you when you return to them, so that you may turn away from them. Turn away from them; they are defilement, and their refuge is Hell, as recompense for what they used to earn.

At-Tawbah 9:96

ۖ

They swear to you so that you may be pleased with them. Even if you are pleased with them, The God is not pleased with the defiantly disobedient people.

At-Tawbah 9:97

ۗ

The desert Arabs are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits of what The God has sent down upon His Messenger. The God is Knowing, Wise.

At-Tawbah 9:98

ۚ ۗ

Among the desert Arabs are those who regard what they spend as a loss and await turns of fortune against you. Upon them is the evil turn. The God is Hearing, Knowing.

At-Tawbah 9:99

ۚ ۚ ۗ

Among the desert Arabs are those who believe in The God and the Last Day and regard what they spend as means of nearness to The God and the prayers of the Messenger. Indeed, it is a means of nearness for them. The God will admit them into His mercy. The God is Forgiving, Merciful.

At-Tawbah 9:100

ۚ

The first forerunners among the emigrants and the helpers, and those who followed them with excellence—The God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, remaining in them forever. That is the great triumph.

At-Tawbah 9:101

ۖ ۖ ۖ ۚ

Among the desert Arabs around you are hypocrites, and among the people of Medina as well. They persist in hypocrisy. You do not know them; We know them. We will punish them twice, then they will be returned to a great punishment.

At-Tawbah 9:102

ۚ

Others have acknowledged their sins. They mixed a righteous deed with another that was evil. It may be that The God will turn toward them. The God is Forgiving, Merciful.

At-Tawbah 9:103

ۖ ۗ

Take charity from their wealth, purifying them and fostering their growth through it, and pray for them. Your prayer is a source of tranquility for them. The God is Hearing, Knowing.

At-Tawbah 9:104

Do they not know that The God accepts repentance from His servants and receives charities, and that The God is the One who repeatedly turns toward them, the Merciful?

At-Tawbah 9:105

ۖ

Say, “Act; The God, His Messenger, and the believers will see your deeds. You will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”

At-Tawbah 9:106

ۗ

Others are deferred to the command of The God: He will either punish them or turn toward them. The God is Knowing, Wise.

At-Tawbah 9:107

ۚ ۖ

Those who took a mosque for harm, disbelief, division among the believers, and as an outpost for one who had fought The God and His Messenger before—they will surely swear, “We intended only good.” The God bears witness that they are liars.

At-Tawbah 9:108

ۚ ۚ ۚ

Never stand in it. A mosque founded on mindfulness from the first day has a greater right that you stand in it. In it are men who love to purify themselves. The God loves those who purify themselves.

At-Tawbah 9:109

ۗ

Is one who founded his building upon mindfulness of The God and His approval better, or one who founded his building on the edge of a crumbling bank, which collapsed with him into the fire of Hell? The God does not guide the unjust people.

At-Tawbah 9:110

ۗ

The building they built will remain a source of doubt in their hearts, unless their hearts are torn apart. The God is Knowing, Wise.

At-Tawbah 9:111

ۚ ۖ ۚ ۚ ۚ

The God has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for the Garden. They fight in the way of The God, killing and being killed—a true promise binding upon Him in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an. Who is more faithful to his covenant than The God? Rejoice in the bargain you have made. That is the great triumph.

At-Tawbah 9:112

ۗ

Those who repent, worship, praise, travel, bow, prostrate, command what is right, forbid what is wrong, and guard the limits of The God. Give good news to the believers.

At-Tawbah 9:113

It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the associators, even if they are relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Blaze.

At-Tawbah 9:114

ۚ

Abraham’s seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. When it became clear to him that he was an enemy of The God, he disowned him. Abraham was much given to sighing, forbearing.

At-Tawbah 9:115

ۚ

The God would not lead a people astray after guiding them until He makes clear to them what they should guard against. The God knows everything.

At-Tawbah 9:116

ۖ ۚ

To The God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death. Apart from The God, you have no guardian or helper.

At-Tawbah 9:117

ۚ

The God has turned toward the Prophet, the emigrants, and the helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a group of them nearly swerved. Then He turned toward them. He is Kind, Merciful toward them.

At-Tawbah 9:118

ۚ

And toward the three who were left behind, until the earth, despite its breadth, became narrow for them, and their own souls became narrow for them, and they knew there was no refuge from The God except in Him. Then He turned toward them so that they might repent. The God is the One who repeatedly turns toward them, the Merciful.

At-Tawbah 9:119

You who believe, be mindful of The God and be with the truthful.

At-Tawbah 9:120

ۚ ۚ

It is not for the people of Medina and the desert Arabs around them to stay behind the Messenger of The God or prefer their own lives to his. No thirst, weariness, or hunger afflicts them in the way of The God, nor do they tread any ground that angers the disbelievers, nor gain anything against an enemy, without a righteous deed being recorded for them because of it. The God does not let the reward of the doers of good be lost.

At-Tawbah 9:121

They spend no small or great amount, nor cross any valley, without it being recorded for them, so that The God may reward them for the best of what they used to do.

At-Tawbah 9:122

ۚ

It is not for the believers to go forth all together. Why, then, does a group from every division of them not go forth to gain understanding in religion and warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware?

At-Tawbah 9:123

ۚ

You who believe, fight those of the disbelievers who are near you, and let them find firmness in you. Know that The God is with the mindful.

At-Tawbah 9:124

ۚ

When a surah is sent down, some of them say, “Which of you has this increased in faith?” As for those who believe, it has increased their faith, and they rejoice.

At-Tawbah 9:125

As for those in whose hearts is disease, it has added defilement to their defilement, and they died while disbelievers.

At-Tawbah 9:126

Do they not see that they are tried once or twice every year? Yet they do not repent or take heed.

At-Tawbah 9:127

ۚ

When a surah is sent down, they look at one another: “Does anyone see you?” Then they turn away. The God has turned their hearts away because they are people who do not understand.

At-Tawbah 9:128

A messenger from among yourselves has come to you. Your suffering weighs heavily upon him; he is deeply concerned for you, kind and merciful toward the believers.

At-Tawbah 9:129

ۖ ۖ

If they turn away, say, “The God is sufficient for me. There is no god except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the great Throne.”
