·The Night Journey·111 Verses

In the name of The God, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Al-Isra 17:1

ۚ

Glory be to the One who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. Surely He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

Al-Isra 17:2

We gave Moses the Book and made it guidance for the Children of Israel: “Take no trustee apart from Me.”

Al-Isra 17:3

ۚ

Descendants of those We carried with Noah—surely he was a grateful servant.

Al-Isra 17:4

We declared to the Children of Israel in the Book: “You will surely spread corruption on earth twice, and you will surely rise in great arrogance.”

Al-Isra 17:5

ۚ

When the promise of the first of the two came, We raised against you servants of Ours possessing great might, who searched through the dwellings. It was a promise fulfilled.

Al-Isra 17:6

Then We restored your turn against them, reinforced you with wealth and sons, and made you greater in number.

Al-Isra 17:7

ۖ ۚ

If you do good, you do good for yourselves; if you do evil, it is against yourselves. When the latter promise came, that they might bring sorrow to your faces, enter the mosque as they entered it the first time, and utterly destroy whatever they overcame.

Al-Isra 17:8

ۚ ۘ

Perhaps your Lord will have mercy on you. If you return, We will return. We have made Hell a prison for the disbelievers.

Al-Isra 17:9

Surely this Quran guides to what is most upright and gives good news to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward,

Al-Isra 17:10

And that for those who do not believe in the Hereafter We have prepared a painful punishment.

Al-Isra 17:11

ۖ

The human being calls for evil as he calls for good, and the human being is hasty.

Al-Isra 17:12

ۖ ۚ

We made the night and the day two signs. We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day illuminating, so that you may seek bounty from your Lord and know the number of years and the reckoning. We have set out everything in detail.

Al-Isra 17:13

ۖ

We have fastened every human being’s record to his neck, and on the Day of Resurrection We will bring out for him a book which he will find spread open.

Al-Isra 17:14

“Read your book. Today you yourself suffice as a reckoner against yourself.”

Al-Isra 17:15

ۖ ۚ ۗ

Whoever is guided is guided only for himself, and whoever strays strays only against himself. No bearer bears another’s burden. We do not punish until We have sent a messenger.

Al-Isra 17:16

When We intend to destroy a town, We command its affluent people, but they act defiantly in it. Then the word becomes due against it, and We destroy it utterly.

Al-Isra 17:17

ۗ

How many generations We destroyed after Noah! Your Lord suffices as One aware of and seeing His servants’ sins.

Al-Isra 17:18

Whoever desires the immediate life, We hasten in it whatever We will for whomever We intend. Then We appoint Hell for him, where he will burn, blamed and rejected.

Al-Isra 17:19

Whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it with the striving it deserves, while a believer—their striving is appreciated.

Al-Isra 17:20

ۚ

We extend to all, these and those, from your Lord’s gift. Your Lord’s gift is not restricted.

Al-Isra 17:21

ۚ

Look how We have favored some over others. The Hereafter is greater in degrees and greater in distinction.

Al-Isra 17:22

Do not set up another god alongside The God, lest you sit blamed and forsaken.

Al-Isra 17:23

ۚ

Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him and do good to parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say “Uff” to them or rebuke them, but speak to them a noble word.

Al-Isra 17:24

Lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy, and say, “My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.”

Al-Isra 17:25

ۚ

Your Lord knows best what is within you. If you are righteous, He is Forgiving to those who turn back.

Al-Isra 17:26

Give the relative his due, and the needy and the traveler, and do not squander wastefully.

Al-Isra 17:27

ۖ

Surely the squanderers are brothers of the devils, and Satan is deeply ungrateful to his Lord.

Al-Isra 17:28

If you turn away from them, seeking mercy from your Lord which you hope for, then speak to them a gentle word.

Al-Isra 17:29

Do not keep your hand bound to your neck, nor extend it to its fullest extent, lest you sit blamed and exhausted.

Al-Isra 17:30

ۚ

Surely your Lord expands provision for whom He wills and restricts it. He is aware of and sees His servants.

Al-Isra 17:31

ۖ ۚ

Do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Surely killing them is a great sin.

Al-Isra 17:32

ۖ

Do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. It is an indecency and an evil way.

Al-Isra 17:33

ۗ ۖ

Do not kill the soul which The God has made inviolable except by right. Whoever is killed unjustly, We have given his guardian authority, so let him not exceed limits in killing. Surely he is supported.

Al-Isra 17:34

ۚ ۖ

Do not approach the orphan’s property except in the best manner, until he reaches maturity. Fulfill the covenant; surely the covenant will be questioned about.

Al-Isra 17:35

ۚ

Give full measure when you measure, and weigh with a straight balance. That is better and best in outcome.

Al-Isra 17:36

ۚ

Do not pursue what you have no knowledge of. Surely the hearing, the sight, and the heart—each of these will be questioned about.

Al-Isra 17:37

ۖ

Do not walk on earth exultantly. You will never tear the earth apart, nor reach the mountains in height.

Al-Isra 17:38

The evil of all that is hateful to your Lord.

Al-Isra 17:39

ۗ

That is of the wisdom your Lord has revealed to you. Do not set up another god alongside The God, lest you be cast into Hell, blamed and rejected.

Al-Isra 17:40

ۚ

Has your Lord favored you with sons and taken females from among the angels? Surely you speak a tremendous word.

Al-Isra 17:41

We have certainly varied the presentation in this Quran so that they may take heed, but it only increases their aversion.

Al-Isra 17:42

Say, “If there were gods with Him, as they say, they would then seek a way to the Possessor of the Throne.”

Al-Isra 17:43

Glory be to Him! He is exalted far above what they say.

Al-Isra 17:44

ۚ ۗ

The seven heavens, the earth, and whoever is in them glorify Him. There is nothing that does not glorify Him with praise, but you do not understand their glorification. Surely He is Forbearing, Forgiving.

Al-Isra 17:45

When you recite the Quran, We place a concealed barrier between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter.

Al-Isra 17:46

ۚ

We have placed coverings over their hearts lest they understand it, and heaviness in their ears. When you mention your Lord alone in the Quran, they turn their backs in aversion.

Al-Isra 17:47

We know best how they listen when they listen to you, and when they confer privately, when the wrongdoers say, “You follow only a bewitched man.”

Al-Isra 17:48

Look how they set forth likenesses for you, then went astray and cannot find a way.

Al-Isra 17:49

They said, “When we are bones and crumbled remains, will we really be raised as a new creation?”

Al-Isra 17:50

Say, “Be stones or iron,

Al-Isra 17:51

ۚ ۖ ۚ ۖ

Or a creation of what seems great within your breasts.” They will say, “Who will bring us back?” Say, “The One who originated you the first time.” Then they will shake their heads at you and say, “When will it be?” Say, “Perhaps it is near.”

Al-Isra 17:52

On the day He calls you and you respond with His praise, and you think that you remained only a little while.

Al-Isra 17:53

ۚ ۚ

Tell My servants to say what is best. Surely Satan sows discord among them. Surely Satan is an open enemy to the human being.

Al-Isra 17:54

ۖ ۚ

Your Lord knows you best. If He wills, He has mercy on you, or if He wills, He punishes you. We have not sent you as a trustee over them.

Al-Isra 17:55

ۗ ۖ

Your Lord knows best whoever is in the heavens and the earth. We certainly favored some prophets over others, and We gave David the Psalms.

Al-Isra 17:56

Say, “Call upon those whom you claim apart from Him. They have no power to remove harm from you or to shift it.”

Al-Isra 17:57

ۚ

Those whom they call upon themselves seek a means of approach to their Lord—which of them is nearer—and hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Your Lord’s punishment is indeed to be guarded against.

Al-Isra 17:58

ۚ

There is no town that We will not destroy before the Day of Resurrection or punish with severe punishment. That is written in the Book.

Al-Isra 17:59

ۚ ۚ

Nothing prevented Us from sending the signs except that the earlier peoples denied them. We gave Thamud the she-camel as a clear sign, but they wronged her. We send signs only to give warning.

Al-Isra 17:60

ۚ ۚ

When We told you, “Your Lord encompasses the people.” We made the vision We showed you only a trial for the people, and also the cursed tree in the Qur’an. We warn them, but it only increases them in great transgression.

Al-Isra 17:61

When We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” they prostrated, except Iblis. He said, “Shall I prostrate before one You created from clay?”

Al-Isra 17:62

He said, “Tell me, is this the one You have honored above me? If You give me respite until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely take his descendants under my control, except a few.”

Al-Isra 17:63

He said, “Go! Whoever among them follows you, Hell will be your recompense—a full recompense.

Al-Isra 17:64

ۚ

Stir up whomever you can among them with your voice, rally your cavalry and infantry against them, share in their wealth and children, and make them promises.” Satan promises them nothing but delusion.

Al-Isra 17:65

ۚ

“Over My servants you have no authority.” Your Lord suffices as a trustee.

Al-Isra 17:66

ۚ

Your Lord is the One who drives the ships for you through the sea so that you may seek His bounty. He is indeed merciful to you.

Al-Isra 17:67

ۖ ۚ

When harm touches you at sea, those you call upon vanish from your thoughts except Him. But when He brings you safely to land, you turn away. The human being is ever ungrateful.

Al-Isra 17:68

Do you feel secure that He will not make a tract of land swallow you or send a storm of stones against you, and then you will find no trustee for yourselves?

Al-Isra 17:69

ۙ

Or do you feel secure that He will not return you to it another time, send a shattering wind against you, and drown you for your ingratitude, and then you will find no one to pursue Us on your behalf over it?

Al-Isra 17:70

We have certainly honored the children of Adam, carried them on land and sea, provided them with good things, and greatly favored them above many of those We created.

Al-Isra 17:71

ۖ

On the day We call every group of people with their leader, those given their book in their right hand will read their book and will not be wronged by so much as a thread.

Al-Isra 17:72

Whoever is blind in this will be blind in the Hereafter and further astray from the way.

Al-Isra 17:73

ۖ

They almost tempted you away from what We revealed to you, so that you would invent something else against Us. Then they would have taken you as a close friend.

Al-Isra 17:74

Had We not made you firm, you would nearly have inclined toward them a little.

Al-Isra 17:75

Then We would have made you taste double in life and double in death. Then you would have found no helper for yourself against Us.

Al-Isra 17:76

ۖ

They almost unsettled you from the land to drive you out of it. Then they would have remained after you only a little while.

Al-Isra 17:77

ۖ

Such was the way with Our messengers whom We sent before you. You will find no alteration in Our way.

Al-Isra 17:78

ۖ

Establish prayer from the sun’s decline until the darkness of night, and the recitation at dawn. The recitation at dawn is indeed witnessed.

Al-Isra 17:79

And during part of the night, keep vigil with it as an additional devotion for you. Perhaps your Lord will raise you to a praised station.

Al-Isra 17:80

Say, “My Lord, bring me in with a true entrance and bring me out with a true exit, and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.”

Al-Isra 17:81

ۚ

Say, “Truth has come, and falsehood has passed away. Falsehood is indeed bound to pass away.”

Al-Isra 17:82

ۙ

We send down of the Qur’an what is healing and mercy for the believers, but it increases the wrongdoers only in loss.

Al-Isra 17:83

ۖ

When We bestow favor on the human being, he turns away and withdraws to one side. When harm touches him, he becomes deeply despairing.

Al-Isra 17:84

Say, “Everyone acts according to their own disposition. Your Lord knows best who is better guided in the way.”

Al-Isra 17:85

ۖ

They ask you about the spirit. Say, “The spirit is of my Lord’s command, and you have been given only a little knowledge.”

Al-Isra 17:86

If We willed, We could surely take away what We revealed to you. Then you would find no trustee for yourself against Us concerning it,

Al-Isra 17:87

ۚ

except as a mercy from your Lord. His bounty toward you is indeed great.

Al-Isra 17:88

Say, “If humans and jinn gathered to bring the like of this Qur’an, they could not bring its like, even if they supported one another.”

Al-Isra 17:89

We have certainly presented every kind of example in varied ways for the people in this Qur’an, but most people insist on nothing but disbelief.

Al-Isra 17:90

They said, “We will never believe you until you make a spring gush from the ground for us,

Al-Isra 17:91

or you have a garden of palms and grapevines and make rivers gush abundantly through it,

Al-Isra 17:92

or you make the sky fall upon us in pieces as you have claimed, or bring The God and the angels face to face,

Al-Isra 17:93

ۗ

or you have a house of gold, or ascend into the sky. We will not believe in your ascent until you bring down to us a book that we can read.” Say, “Glory be to my Lord! Am I anything but a human messenger?”

Al-Isra 17:94

Nothing prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them except that they said, “Has The God sent a human as a messenger?”

Al-Isra 17:95

Say, “If there were angels walking securely on the earth, We would surely have sent down to them an angel from heaven as a messenger.”

Al-Isra 17:96

ۚ

Say, “The God suffices as a witness between me and you. He is indeed fully aware of His servants and sees them.”

Al-Isra 17:97

ۖ ۖ ۖ ۖ

Whoever The God guides is rightly guided. Whoever He leads astray, you will find no guardians for them apart from Him. On the Day of Resurrection, We will gather them on their faces, blind, mute, and deaf. Their refuge is Hell; whenever it subsides, We will increase its blaze for them.

Al-Isra 17:98

That is their recompense because they rejected Our signs and said, “When we have become bones and crumbled remains, will we really be raised in a new creation?”

Al-Isra 17:99

Have they not seen that The God, who created the heavens and the earth, is able to create their like? He has appointed for them a term about which there is no doubt, but the wrongdoers insist on nothing but disbelief.

Al-Isra 17:100

ۚ

Say, “If you possessed the treasures of my Lord’s mercy, you would hold them back for fear of spending.” The human being is ever stingy.

Al-Isra 17:101

ۖ

We certainly gave Moses nine clear signs. Ask the children of Israel: when he came to them, Pharaoh said to him, “Moses, I think you are bewitched.”

Al-Isra 17:102

He said, “You certainly know that none but the Lord of the heavens and the earth sent these down as insights. And I think you, Pharaoh, are doomed.”

Al-Isra 17:103

He intended to drive them from the land, so We drowned him and all those with him.

Al-Isra 17:104

After him, We said to the children of Israel, “Dwell in the land. When the promise of the Hereafter comes, We will bring you all together.”

Al-Isra 17:105

ۗ

With truth We sent it down, and with truth it descended. We sent you only as a bearer of good news and a warner.

Al-Isra 17:106

And a Qur’an We have divided so that you may recite it to the people at intervals, and We sent it down gradually.

Al-Isra 17:107

ۚ

Say, “Believe in it or do not believe.” Those who were given knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, fall upon their chins in prostration,

Al-Isra 17:108

and say, “Glory be to our Lord! Our Lord’s promise is surely fulfilled.”

Al-Isra 17:109

۩

They fall upon their chins, weeping, and it increases them in humility.

Al-Isra 17:110

ۖ ۚ

Say, “Call upon The God or call upon the Entirely Merciful. Whichever you call upon, to Him belong the most beautiful names.” Do not be loud in your prayer or quiet in it, but seek a way between the two.

Al-Isra 17:111

ۖ

Say, “Praise belongs to The God, who has taken no child, who has no partner in sovereignty, and who has no guardian out of weakness.” Magnify Him greatly.
