In the name of The God, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Al-Kahf 18:1
ۜ
Praise belongs to The God, who sent down the Book upon His servant and placed no crookedness in it,
Al-Kahf 18:2
upright, to warn of severe punishment from Him and give good news to the believers who do righteous deeds that they have a good reward,
Al-Kahf 18:3
in which they will remain forever,
Al-Kahf 18:4
and to warn those who say, “The God has taken a child.”
Al-Kahf 18:5
ۚ ۚ
They have no knowledge of this, nor did their fathers. Grave is the word that comes out of their mouths. They say nothing but a lie.
Al-Kahf 18:6
Perhaps you would destroy yourself with grief over them if they do not believe in this discourse.
Al-Kahf 18:7
We made what is on the earth an adornment for it, to test them as to which of them is best in deeds.
Al-Kahf 18:8
We will surely turn what is on it into barren ground.
Al-Kahf 18:9
Or did you think that the companions of the cave and the inscription were a wonder among Our signs?
Al-Kahf 18:10
When the young men took refuge in the cave and said, “Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare right guidance for us in our affair.”
Al-Kahf 18:11
Then We drew a veil over their ears in the cave for a number of years.
Al-Kahf 18:12
Then We raised them up to know which of the two groups had more accurately counted the time they had remained.
Al-Kahf 18:13
ۚ
We relate their account to you in truth. They were young men who believed in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance.
Al-Kahf 18:14
ۖ
We strengthened their hearts when they stood up and said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will never call upon a god apart from Him; then we would have spoken an outrageous falsehood.
Al-Kahf 18:15
ۖ ۖ
These people of ours have taken gods apart from Him. Why do they not bring clear authority for them? Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against The God?”
Al-Kahf 18:16
“When you have withdrawn from them and what they worship except The God, take refuge in the cave. Your Lord will spread His mercy over you and prepare ease for you in your affair.”
Al-Kahf 18:17
ۚ ۗ ۖ
You see the sun, when it rises, incline away from their cave to the right, and when it sets, pass them on the left, while they are in an open space within it. That is among the signs of The God. Whoever The God guides is rightly guided; whoever He leads astray, you will find no guiding guardian for him.
Al-Kahf 18:18
ۚ ۖ ۚ
You would think them awake, though they are asleep. We turn them to the right and the left, while their dog stretches its forelegs across the threshold. If you had looked upon them, you would have turned away in flight and been filled with fear of them.
Al-Kahf 18:19
ۚ ۖ ۚ
In this way We raised them up so that they might question one another. One of them said, “How long have you remained?” They said, “We have remained a day or part of a day.” They said, “Your Lord knows best how long you have remained. Send one of you to the city with this silver of yours. Let him see which food is purest and bring you provision from it. Let him act discreetly and not make anyone aware of you.
Al-Kahf 18:20
If they discover you, they will stone you or return you to their creed, and then you will never prosper.”
Al-Kahf 18:21
ۖ ۖ ۚ
In this way We caused them to be discovered, so that people might know that the promise of The God is true and that there is no doubt about the Hour. When they disputed their affair among themselves, they said, “Build a structure over them. Their Lord knows them best.” Those who prevailed over their affair said, “We will certainly build a place of prostration over them.”
Al-Kahf 18:22
ۖ ۚ ۗ
They will say, “Three, and their dog was the fourth,” and they say, “Five, and their dog was the sixth,” guessing at the unseen. They say, “Seven, and their dog was the eighth.” Say, “My Lord knows their number best. Only a few know them.” So dispute about them only with an evident argument, and do not ask any of them for an opinion about them.
Al-Kahf 18:23
Never say of anything, “I will do that tomorrow,”
Al-Kahf 18:24
ۚ
except, “If The God wills.” Remember your Lord when you forget, and say, “Perhaps my Lord will guide me to something nearer to right guidance than this.”
Al-Kahf 18:25
They remained in their cave for three hundred years, and added nine.
Al-Kahf 18:26
ۖ ۖ ۚ
Say, “The God knows best how long they remained. To Him belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How well He sees and hears! They have no guardian apart from Him, and He shares His judgment with no one.”
Al-Kahf 18:27
ۖ
Recite what has been revealed to you of your Lord’s Book. None can change His words, and you will find no refuge apart from Him.
Al-Kahf 18:28
ۖ ۖ
Keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face. Do not let your eyes pass beyond them, seeking the adornment of worldly life. Do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows his desire and whose affair exceeds all bounds.
Al-Kahf 18:29
ۖ ۚ ۚ ۚ
Say, “The truth is from your Lord. Let whoever wills believe, and let whoever wills disbelieve.” We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire whose enclosure surrounds them. If they cry for relief, they will be given water like molten metal that scalds faces. What an evil drink and a dreadful resting place!
Al-Kahf 18:30
As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, We do not let the reward of anyone who acts well be lost.
Al-Kahf 18:31
ۚ
They will have gardens of lasting abode, with rivers flowing beneath them. There they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and wear green garments of fine silk and brocade, reclining on couches. What an excellent reward and a beautiful resting place!
Al-Kahf 18:32
Set forth for them the example of two men: for one of them We made two gardens of grapevines, surrounded them with palms, and placed crops between them.
Al-Kahf 18:33
ۚ
Both gardens yielded their produce without falling short at all, and We made a river flow through them.
Al-Kahf 18:34
He had fruit, and said to his companion while conversing with him, “I am greater than you in wealth and stronger in numbers.”
Al-Kahf 18:35
He entered his garden while wronging himself and said, “I do not think this will ever perish.
Al-Kahf 18:36
Nor do I think the Hour will come. Even if I am returned to my Lord, I will surely find a better place of return than this.”
Al-Kahf 18:37
His companion said to him while conversing with him, “Do you disbelieve in the One who created you from dust, then from a drop, then formed you into a man?
Al-Kahf 18:38
But as for me, He is The God, my Lord, and I associate no one with my Lord.
Al-Kahf 18:39
ۚ
Why, when you entered your garden, did you not say, ‘What The God wills! There is no power except through The God’? If you see me as less than you in wealth and children,
Al-Kahf 18:40
perhaps my Lord will give me something better than your garden and send a calamity upon it from the sky, so that it becomes bare, slippery ground,
Al-Kahf 18:41
or its water will sink away, so that you cannot seek it out.”
Al-Kahf 18:42
His fruit was encompassed by ruin, and he began turning his hands over what he had spent on it, while it lay collapsed upon its trellises. He said, “If only I had associated no one with my Lord!”
Al-Kahf 18:43
He had no group to help him against The God, nor could he help himself.
Al-Kahf 18:44
ۚ
There, protection belongs to The God, the True. He is best in reward and best in outcome.
Al-Kahf 18:45
ۗ
Set forth for them the likeness of worldly life: it is like water We send down from the sky, with which the vegetation of the earth mingles, then becomes dry fragments scattered by the winds. The God has power over all things.
Al-Kahf 18:46
ۖ
Wealth and sons are the adornment of worldly life. Lasting righteous deeds are better with your Lord in reward and better in hope.
Al-Kahf 18:47
On the day We set the mountains in motion, you will see the earth laid bare. We will gather them and leave none of them behind.
Al-Kahf 18:48
ۚ
They will be presented before your Lord in rows: “You have come to Us as We created you the first time. Yet you claimed We would never appoint a meeting for you.”
Al-Kahf 18:49
ۚ ۗ
The Book will be placed, and you will see the guilty fearful of what is in it. They will say, “Woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great without counting it?” They will find what they did present, and your Lord wrongs no one.
Al-Kahf 18:50
ۗ ۚ
When We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” they prostrated, except Iblis. He was of the jinn and departed from his Lord’s command. Will you take him and his descendants as guardians instead of Me, when they are your enemies? What an evil exchange for the wrongdoers!
Al-Kahf 18:51
I did not make them witnesses to the creation of the heavens and the earth, or to their own creation. I would not take those who lead astray as helpers.
Al-Kahf 18:52
On the day He says, “Call upon My partners whom you claimed,” they will call upon them, but they will not answer them. We will place a place of destruction between them.
Al-Kahf 18:53
The guilty will see the Fire and know they will fall into it, and they will find no escape from it.
Al-Kahf 18:54
ۚ
We have certainly presented every kind of example in varied ways for people in this Qur’an. The human being is, above all things, most argumentative.
Al-Kahf 18:55
Nothing has kept people from believing when guidance came to them and seeking their Lord’s forgiveness, except that the way of the earlier peoples should come upon them, or punishment should confront them face to face.
Al-Kahf 18:56
ۚ ۖ
We send the messengers only as bearers of good news and warners. Those who disbelieve argue with falsehood to defeat the truth with it, and they take My signs and what they are warned of in mockery.
Al-Kahf 18:57
ۚ ۖ
Who is more unjust than one who is reminded of his Lord’s signs but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have sent ahead? We have placed coverings over their hearts lest they understand it, and heaviness in their ears. Even if you call them to guidance, they will never be guided.
Al-Kahf 18:58
ۖ ۚ
Your Lord is the Forgiving, the Possessor of mercy. If He took them to account for what they earned, He would hasten the punishment for them. But they have an appointed time from which they will find no refuge.
Al-Kahf 18:59
Those towns—We destroyed them when they did wrong, and We appointed a time for their destruction.
Al-Kahf 18:60
When Moses said to his young companion, “I will not stop until I reach the junction of the two seas, or go on for a long time.”
Al-Kahf 18:61
When they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its way into the sea like a tunnel.
Al-Kahf 18:62
When they had passed beyond, he said to his young companion, “Bring us our meal. We have certainly met with weariness on this journey.”
Al-Kahf 18:63
ۚ
He said, “Did you see? When we took refuge by the rock, I forgot the fish. None but Satan made me forget to mention it. It took its way into the sea in a wondrous manner.”
Al-Kahf 18:64
ۚ
He said, “That is what we were seeking.” So they returned, retracing their footsteps.
Al-Kahf 18:65
They found a servant among Our servants to whom We had given mercy from Us and taught knowledge from Our presence.
Al-Kahf 18:66
Moses said to him, “May I follow you so that you teach me something of the right guidance you have been taught?”
Al-Kahf 18:67
He said, “You will not be able to bear patiently with me.
Al-Kahf 18:68
How can you bear patiently with something you do not encompass in knowledge?”
Al-Kahf 18:69
He said, “If The God wills, you will find me patient, and I will not disobey any command of yours.”
Al-Kahf 18:70
He said, “If you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I myself speak to you of it.”
Al-Kahf 18:71
ۖ
They set out until, when they boarded the ship, he made a hole in it. He said, “Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? You have done a grievous thing!”
Al-Kahf 18:72
He said, “Did I not say that you would not be able to bear patiently with me?”
Al-Kahf 18:73
He said, “Do not take me to account for what I forgot, and do not burden me with hardship in my affair.”
Al-Kahf 18:74
They set out until, when they met a boy, he killed him. He said, “Have you killed a pure soul without its having killed another? You have done a terrible thing!”
Al-Kahf 18:75
He said, “Did I not tell you that you would not be able to bear patiently with me?”
Al-Kahf 18:76
ۖ
He said, “If I ask you about anything after this, do not keep me as your companion. You have received an excuse from me.”
Al-Kahf 18:77
ۖ
They set out until, when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to host them. There they found a wall about to collapse, and he set it upright. He said, “If you wished, you could have taken payment for it.”
Al-Kahf 18:78
ۚ
He said, “This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the meaning of what you could not bear patiently.
Al-Kahf 18:79
As for the ship, it belonged to needy people working at sea. I wished to damage it, for beyond them was a king who seized every ship by force.
Al-Kahf 18:80
As for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overwhelm them with transgression and disbelief.
Al-Kahf 18:81
We wanted their Lord to replace him for them with one better in purity and closer in affection.
Al-Kahf 18:82
ۚ ۚ
As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and beneath it was a treasure for them. Their father was righteous, so your Lord wanted them to reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. I did not do it on my own command. That is the meaning of what you could not bear patiently.”
Al-Kahf 18:83
ۖ
They ask you about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, “I will recite to you an account of him.”
Al-Kahf 18:84
We established him in the land and gave him a means to everything.
Al-Kahf 18:85
So he followed a course,
Al-Kahf 18:86
ۗ
until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring and found a people beside it. We said, “Dhul-Qarnayn, either punish or adopt goodness toward them.”
Al-Kahf 18:87
He said, “As for one who does wrong, we will punish him; then he will be returned to his Lord, who will punish him with a terrible punishment.
Al-Kahf 18:88
ۖ
As for one who believes and acts righteously, he will have the finest reward, and we will speak to him with ease in our command.”
Al-Kahf 18:89
Then he followed a course,
Al-Kahf 18:90
until, when he reached the rising place of the sun, he found it rising upon a people for whom We had made no shelter from it.
Al-Kahf 18:91
So it was. We encompassed in knowledge what was with him.
Al-Kahf 18:92
Then he followed a course,
Al-Kahf 18:93
until, when he reached between the two barriers, he found before them a people who could scarcely understand speech.
Al-Kahf 18:94
They said, “Dhul-Qarnayn, Gog and Magog spread corruption in the land. Shall we pay you a tribute so that you build a barrier between us and them?”
Al-Kahf 18:95
He said, “What my Lord has established me in is better. Help me with strength, and I will make a solid barrier between you and them.
Al-Kahf 18:96
ۖ ۖ
Bring me blocks of iron.” When he had leveled the space between the two slopes, he said, “Blow!” When he had made it fire, he said, “Bring me molten copper to pour over it.”
Al-Kahf 18:97
They could neither climb over it nor pierce it.
Al-Kahf 18:98
ۖ ۖ
He said, “This is a mercy from my Lord. When my Lord’s promise comes, He will make it level. My Lord’s promise is true.”
Al-Kahf 18:99
ۖ
On that day We will leave some of them surging into others, and the trumpet will be blown. Then We will gather them all together.
Al-Kahf 18:100
On that day We will display Hell openly to the disbelievers,
Al-Kahf 18:101
those whose eyes were covered against My remembrance and who could not bear to hear.
Al-Kahf 18:102
ۚ
Do those who disbelieve think they can take My servants as guardians instead of Me? We have prepared Hell as a lodging for the disbelievers.
Al-Kahf 18:103
Say, “Shall We inform you of the greatest losers in deeds?
Al-Kahf 18:104
Those whose striving has gone astray in worldly life, while they think they are doing well.”
Al-Kahf 18:105
They are those who rejected their Lord’s signs and the meeting with Him. Their deeds have come to nothing, and on the Day of Resurrection We will assign them no weight.
Al-Kahf 18:106
That is their recompense—Hell—because they disbelieved and took My signs and My messengers in mockery.
Al-Kahf 18:107
Those who believe and do righteous deeds will have the gardens of Paradise as a lodging,
Al-Kahf 18:108
remaining there forever, seeking no change from it.
Al-Kahf 18:109
Say, “If the sea were ink for my Lord’s words, the sea would be exhausted before my Lord’s words were exhausted, even if We brought its like as a replenishment.”
Al-Kahf 18:110
ۖ
Say, “I am only a human like you. It is revealed to me that your god is only One God. Whoever hopes to meet his Lord, let him do righteous work and associate no one in the worship of his Lord.”
