·The Pilgrimage·78 Verses

In the name of The God, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

Al-Hajj 22:1

ۚ

O people, be mindful of your Lord. The shaking of the Hour is indeed a tremendous thing.

Al-Hajj 22:2

On the day you see it, every nursing woman will be distracted from what she nurses, and every pregnant woman will lay down her burden. You will see people drunk, though they are not drunk; but the punishment of The God is severe.

Al-Hajj 22:3

Among people is one who disputes about The God without knowledge and follows every rebellious devil.

Al-Hajj 22:4

It has been written concerning him that whoever takes him as a protector, he will mislead him and guide him to the punishment of the blaze.

Al-Hajj 22:5

ۚ ۖ ۚ

O people, if you are in doubt about the resurrection, We created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging thing, then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed, to make clear to you. We settle in the wombs what We will until an appointed term, then bring you out as infants, then that you may reach your full strength. Among you is one who is taken in death, and among you is one returned to the most feeble age, so that after knowledge he knows nothing. You see the earth lifeless; then when We send water down upon it, it stirs and swells and grows every delightful kind.

Al-Hajj 22:6

That is because The God is the truth, because He gives life to the dead, and because He has power over all things.

Al-Hajj 22:7

And because the Hour is coming, with no doubt in it, and because The God will raise those in the graves.

Al-Hajj 22:8

Among people is one who disputes about The God without knowledge, guidance, or an illuminating book,

Al-Hajj 22:9

ۖ ۖ

turning his side away to mislead from the way of The God. For him is disgrace in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection We will make him taste the punishment of burning.

Al-Hajj 22:10

That is for what your two hands have sent ahead, and because The God does not wrong His servants.

Al-Hajj 22:11

ۖ ۖ ۚ

Among people is one who worships The God on an edge. If good befalls him, he is reassured by it; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face. He has lost this world and the hereafter. That is the clear loss.

Al-Hajj 22:12

ۚ

He calls upon, apart from The God, what neither harms him nor benefits him. That is straying far away.

Al-Hajj 22:13

ۚ

He calls upon one whose harm is nearer than his benefit. What a wretched protector and what a wretched companion!

Al-Hajj 22:14

ۚ

The God will indeed admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow. The God does what He wills.

Al-Hajj 22:15

Whoever thinks that The God will not help him in this world and the hereafter, let him stretch a rope toward the sky, then cut; then let him see whether his scheme removes what enrages him.

Al-Hajj 22:16

Thus We sent it down as clear signs, and The God guides whom He wills.

Al-Hajj 22:17

ۚ

Those who have believed, those who became Jews, the Sabians, the Christians, the Magians, and those who have associated partners—The God will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. The God is witness over all things.

Al-Hajj 22:18

ۖ ۗ ۚ ۩

Have you not seen that to The God prostrate whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the creatures, and many of the people? And upon many the punishment has become due. Whoever The God disgraces has none to honor him. The God does what He wills.

Al-Hajj 22:19

ۖ

These are two adversaries who have disputed about their Lord. For those who disbelieved, garments of fire have been cut; boiling water will be poured over their heads.

Al-Hajj 22:20

By it, what is in their bellies and their skins will be melted.

Al-Hajj 22:21

For them are maces of iron.

Al-Hajj 22:22

Whenever they wish to come out of it, out of anguish, they will be returned to it: taste the punishment of burning.

Al-Hajj 22:23

ۖ

The God will indeed admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow. There they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their clothing there will be silk.

Al-Hajj 22:24

They have been guided to good speech and guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.

Al-Hajj 22:25

ۚ

Those who disbelieved and bar from the way of The God and the Sacred Mosque, which We made for people, equal therein being the resident and the desert-dweller—and whoever intends deviation there through wrongdoing, We will make him taste a painful punishment.

Al-Hajj 22:26

When We established for Abraham the place of the House: associate nothing with Me, and purify My House for those who circle it, those who stand, those who bow, and those who prostrate.

Al-Hajj 22:27

Proclaim the pilgrimage among people. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, coming from every distant pass,

Al-Hajj 22:28

ۖ

to witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of The God on known days over the livestock He has provided them. Eat from them and feed the distressed poor.

Al-Hajj 22:29

Then let them remove their uncleanliness, fulfill their vows, and circle the Ancient House.

Al-Hajj 22:30

ۗ ۖ

So it is. Whoever honors the sacred bounds of The God, it is better for him with his Lord. Livestock have been made lawful for you, except what is recited to you. Avoid the filth of idols and avoid false speech,

Al-Hajj 22:31

ۚ

turning upright toward The God, associating no partners with Him. Whoever associates partners with The God is as though he had fallen from the sky and birds snatched him away, or the wind swept him into a distant place.

Al-Hajj 22:32

So it is. Whoever honors the symbols of The God, that is from the mindfulness of hearts.

Al-Hajj 22:33

In them are benefits for you until an appointed term; then their destination is at the Ancient House.

Al-Hajj 22:34

ۗ ۗ

For every community We appointed a rite, so that they may mention the name of The God over the livestock He has provided them. Your god is one God, so submit to Him, and give good news to the humble,

Al-Hajj 22:35

whose hearts tremble when The God is mentioned, who are patient over what has befallen them, who establish prayer, and who spend from what We have provided them.

Al-Hajj 22:36

ۖ ۖ ۚ

We made the sacrificial camels among the symbols of The God for you; in them is good for you. Mention the name of The God over them as they stand in rows. When their sides fall, eat from them and feed the contented and the one who approaches asking. Thus We subjected them to you, so that you may give thanks.

Al-Hajj 22:37

ۚ ۗ

Neither their flesh nor their blood reaches The God, but your mindfulness reaches Him. Thus He subjected them to you, so that you may magnify The God for guiding you. Give good news to those who do good.

Al-Hajj 22:38

ۗ

The God indeed defends those who have believed. The God does not love any treacherous, ungrateful person.

Al-Hajj 22:39

ۚ

Permission has been given to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged. The God is indeed able to help them,

Al-Hajj 22:40

ۗ ۗ ۗ

those who were driven from their homes without right, only because they say: our Lord is The God. Had The God not repelled some people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of The God is mentioned much would have been demolished. The God will surely help whoever helps Him. The God is strong, mighty.

Al-Hajj 22:41

ۗ

Those who, if We establish them in the land, establish prayer, give zakat, command what is right, and forbid what is wrong. To The God belongs the outcome of all affairs.

Al-Hajj 22:42

If they deny you, before them the people of Noah, Aad, and Thamud denied,

Al-Hajj 22:43

and the people of Abraham and the people of Lot,

Al-Hajj 22:44

ۖ ۖ

and the people of Midian; and Moses was denied. I gave the disbelievers respite, then seized them. How was My rejection!

Al-Hajj 22:45

How many a town We destroyed while it was doing wrong, and it lies fallen upon its roofs; and how many an abandoned well and lofty palace!

Al-Hajj 22:46

ۖ

Have they not traveled through the earth, so that they may have hearts with which to reason or ears with which to hear? It is not the eyes that become blind, but the hearts within the chests that become blind.

Al-Hajj 22:47

ۚ

They ask you to hasten the punishment, but The God will never break His promise. A day with your Lord is like a thousand years of what you count.

Al-Hajj 22:48

How many a town I gave respite while it was doing wrong, then seized it. To Me is the return.

Al-Hajj 22:49

Say: O people, I am only a clear warner to you.

Al-Hajj 22:50

Those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have forgiveness and a noble provision.

Al-Hajj 22:51

Those who have striven against Our signs, seeking to thwart, are the companions of the blazing fire.

Al-Hajj 22:52

ۗ

We sent no messenger or prophet before you but that, when he wished, Satan cast into his wish. Then The God removes what Satan casts, then The God makes His signs firm. The God is knowing, wise,

Al-Hajj 22:53

ۗ

so that He may make what Satan casts a trial for those in whose hearts is disease and those whose hearts are hard. The wrongdoers are indeed in far-reaching opposition,

Al-Hajj 22:54

ۗ

and so that those given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord, believe in it, and have their hearts humble themselves to it. The God indeed guides those who have believed to a straight path.

Al-Hajj 22:55

Those who disbelieved will remain in doubt about it until the Hour comes upon them suddenly, or the punishment of a barren day comes upon them.

Al-Hajj 22:56

ۚ

Sovereignty that day belongs to The God. He will judge between them. Those who have believed and done righteous deeds will be in gardens of bliss.

Al-Hajj 22:57

Those who disbelieved and denied Our signs will have a humiliating punishment.

Al-Hajj 22:58

ۚ

Those who emigrated in the way of The God, then were killed or died, The God will surely provide them a good provision. The God is indeed the best of providers.

Al-Hajj 22:59

ۗ

He will surely admit them to a place of entry with which they will be pleased. The God is knowing, forbearing.

Al-Hajj 22:60

ۗ

So it is. Whoever retaliates with the like of what was inflicted upon him, then is oppressed, The God will surely help him. The God is pardoning, forgiving.

Al-Hajj 22:61

That is because The God causes the night to enter the day and the day to enter the night, and because The God is hearing, seeing.

Al-Hajj 22:62

That is because The God is the truth, because what they call upon apart from Him is falsehood, and because The God is the Most High, the Great.

Al-Hajj 22:63

ۗ

Have you not seen that The God sent water down from the sky, and the earth becomes green? The God is subtle, aware.

Al-Hajj 22:64

ۗ

To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. The God is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.

Al-Hajj 22:65

ۗ

Have you not seen that The God subjected to you whatever is on the earth, and the ships sailing through the sea by His command? He holds the sky from falling upon the earth except by His permission. The God is kind, merciful to people.

Al-Hajj 22:66

ۗ

He is the One who gave you life, then causes you to die, then gives you life. The human being is indeed deeply ungrateful.

Al-Hajj 22:67

ۖ ۚ ۖ

For every community We appointed a rite that they perform. So let them not dispute with you about the matter. Call to your Lord; you are indeed upon straight guidance.

Al-Hajj 22:68

If they dispute with you, say: The God knows best what you do.

Al-Hajj 22:69

The God will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning that in which you used to differ.

Al-Hajj 22:70

ۗ ۚ

Do you not know that The God knows whatever is in the heaven and the earth? That is in a book. That is easy for The God.

Al-Hajj 22:71

ۗ

They worship, apart from The God, that for which He has sent down no authority and of which they have no knowledge. The wrongdoers have no helper.

Al-Hajj 22:72

ۖ ۗ ۗ ۖ

When Our clear signs are recited to them, you recognize disapproval in the faces of those who disbelieved. They nearly attack those who recite Our signs to them. Say: shall I inform you of something worse than that? The Fire. The God has promised it to those who disbelieved. What a wretched destination!

Al-Hajj 22:73

ۚ ۖ ۚ

O people, a parable is presented, so listen to it. Those you call upon apart from The God will never create a fly, even if they gather for it. If the fly takes something from them, they cannot recover it from it. Weak are the seeker and the sought.

Al-Hajj 22:74

ۗ

They have not esteemed The God with the esteem due to Him. The God is strong, mighty.

Al-Hajj 22:75

ۚ

The God chooses messengers from the angels and from people. The God is hearing, seeing.

Al-Hajj 22:76

ۗ

He knows what is before them and what is behind them. To The God all affairs are returned.

Al-Hajj 22:77

۩

O you who have believed, bow, prostrate, worship your Lord, and do good, so that you may prosper.

Al-Hajj 22:78

ۚ ۚ ۚ ۚ ۖ

Strive for The God with the striving due to Him. He chose you and placed no hardship upon you in religion—the creed of your father Abraham. He named you Muslims before and in this, so that the messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over people. Establish prayer, give zakat, and hold fast to The God. He is your protector. What an excellent protector and what an excellent helper!
