·The Light·64 Verses

In the name of The God, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

An-Nur 24:1

A surah We have sent down and ordained, in which We have sent down clear signs, so that you may remember.

An-Nur 24:2

ۖ ۖ

The woman who commits zina and the man who commits zina: lash each of them a hundred lashes. Let no pity for them take hold of you in the religion of The God, if you believe in The God and the Last Day. Let a group of believers witness their punishment.

An-Nur 24:3

ۚ

A man who commits zina marries only a woman who commits zina or a woman who associates partners; and a woman who commits zina is married only by a man who commits zina or a man who associates partners. That has been forbidden to the believers.

An-Nur 24:4

ۚ

Those who accuse chaste women, then do not bring four witnesses: lash them eighty lashes and never accept their testimony. They are the defiantly disobedient,

An-Nur 24:5

except those who repent afterward and make amends. The God is forgiving, merciful.

An-Nur 24:6

ۙ

Those who accuse their spouses and have no witnesses except themselves: the testimony of one of them is four testimonies by The God that he is among the truthful,

An-Nur 24:7

and the fifth, that the curse of The God be upon him if he is among the liars.

An-Nur 24:8

ۙ

The punishment is averted from her if she testifies four times by The God that he is among the liars,

An-Nur 24:9

and the fifth, that the anger of The God be upon her if he is among the truthful.

An-Nur 24:10

Were it not for the favor of The God upon you and His mercy, and that The God is accepting of repentance, wise…

An-Nur 24:11

ۚ ۖ ۚ ۚ

Those who brought the slander are indeed a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. Each of them has what he earned of the sin, and the one among them who took on its greater part has a tremendous punishment.

An-Nur 24:12

Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and women not think well of their own people and say: this is a clear slander?

An-Nur 24:13

ۚ

Why did they not bring four witnesses to it? Since they did not bring the witnesses, they are the liars before The God.

An-Nur 24:14

Were it not for the favor of The God upon you and His mercy in this world and the hereafter, a tremendous punishment would have touched you for what you plunged into,

An-Nur 24:15

when you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, thinking it slight, while with The God it is tremendous.

An-Nur 24:16

Why, when you heard it, did you not say: it is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to You! This is a tremendous slander.

An-Nur 24:17

The God admonishes you never to return to the like of it, if you are believers.

An-Nur 24:18

ۚ

The God makes the signs clear to you. The God is knowing, wise.

An-Nur 24:19

ۚ

Those who love that indecency should spread among those who have believed have a painful punishment in this world and the hereafter. The God knows, and you do not know.

An-Nur 24:20

Were it not for the favor of The God upon you and His mercy, and that The God is kind, merciful…

An-Nur 24:21

ۚ ۚ ۗ

O you who have believed, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Whoever follows the footsteps of Satan—he commands indecency and wrongdoing. Were it not for the favor of The God upon you and His mercy, none of you would ever have become pure. But The God purifies whom He wills. The God is hearing, knowing.

An-Nur 24:22

ۖ ۗ ۗ

Let not those among you of bounty and means swear not to give to relatives, the needy, and emigrants in the way of The God. Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that The God should forgive you? The God is forgiving, merciful.

An-Nur 24:23

Those who accuse chaste, unsuspecting, believing women are cursed in this world and the hereafter, and have a tremendous punishment,

An-Nur 24:24

on the day their tongues, hands, and feet testify against them concerning what they used to do.

An-Nur 24:25

That day The God will pay them their true recompense in full, and they will know that The God is the manifest truth.

An-Nur 24:26

ۖ ۚ ۖ

The impure are for the impure, and the impure for the impure; the good are for the good, and the good for the good. Those are innocent of what they say. They have forgiveness and a noble provision.

An-Nur 24:27

ۚ

O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own until you seek a welcome and greet their people. That is better for you, so that you may remember.

An-Nur 24:28

ۖ ۖ ۚ

If you find no one in them, do not enter until permission is given to you. If you are told to go back, then go back; that is purer for you. The God knows what you do.

An-Nur 24:29

ۚ

There is no blame upon you for entering uninhabited houses in which there is some use for you. The God knows what you reveal and what you conceal.

An-Nur 24:30

ۚ ۗ

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. The God is aware of what they do.

An-Nur 24:31

ۖ ۖ ۖ ۚ

Tell the believing women to lower their gaze, guard their private parts, and not display their adornment except what is apparent of it. Let them draw their coverings over their neckline openings. Let them not display their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, those whom their right hands possess, male attendants without desire, or children who have not become aware of women's private parts. Let them not stamp their feet so that their hidden adornment becomes known. Turn to The God together, O believers, so that you may prosper.

An-Nur 24:32

ۚ ۗ

Marry off the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male and female slaves. If they are poor, The God will enrich them from His favor. The God is expansive, knowing.

An-Nur 24:33

ۗ ۖ ۚ ۚ

Let those who cannot find the means for marriage remain chaste until The God enriches them from His favor. Those whom your right hands possess who seek a contract—make a contract with them if you know good in them, and give them from the wealth of The God that He has given you. Do not compel your slave women to prostitution, if they desire chastity, seeking the goods of worldly life. Whoever compels them—The God, after their compulsion, is forgiving, merciful.

An-Nur 24:34

We have certainly sent down to you illuminating signs, an example from those who passed before you, and an admonition for the mindful.

An-Nur 24:35

ۚ ۖ ۖ ۚ ۗ ۚ ۗ

The God is the light of the heavens and the earth. The likeness of His light is a niche containing a lamp; the lamp is in glass, the glass like a brilliant star, lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither eastern nor western. Its oil almost shines even though no fire has touched it. Light upon light! The God guides whom He wills to His light. The God presents examples for people, and The God knows all things.

An-Nur 24:36

In houses that The God has permitted to be raised and His name mentioned therein, He is glorified morning and evening

An-Nur 24:37

ۙ

by men whom neither trade nor sale distracts from remembrance of The God, establishing prayer, and giving zakat. They fear a day on which hearts and eyes will turn about,

An-Nur 24:38

ۗ

so that The God may reward them according to the best of what they have done and increase them from His favor. The God provides for whom He wills without measure.

An-Nur 24:39

ۗ

Those who disbelieved—their deeds are like a mirage on a plain, which the thirsty person thinks is water, until he reaches it and finds it nothing, but finds The God there, who settles his account in full. The God is swift in reckoning.

An-Nur 24:40

ۚ ۗ

Or like darkness in a deep sea, covered by a wave, above it a wave, above it a cloud: darkness upon darkness. When he brings out his hand, he can scarcely see it. Whoever The God gives no light has no light.

An-Nur 24:41

ۖ ۗ

Have you not seen that whoever is in the heavens and the earth, and the birds with wings outspread, glorify The God? Each has known its prayer and glorification. The God knows what they do.

An-Nur 24:42

ۖ

To The God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and to The God is the return.

An-Nur 24:43

ۖ

Have you not seen that The God drives a cloud, then joins it together, then makes it a heap, and you see rain coming out from within it? He sends down hail from the sky, from mountains in it, striking with it whom He wills and turning it away from whom He wills. The brilliance of its lightning almost takes away sight.

An-Nur 24:44

ۚ

The God alternates night and day. In this is indeed a lesson for those with sight.

An-Nur 24:45

ۖ ۚ ۚ

The God created every creature from water. Among them is one that moves on its belly, one that walks on two legs, and one that walks on four. The God creates what He wills. The God has power over all things.

An-Nur 24:46

ۚ

We have certainly sent down illuminating signs. The God guides whom He wills to a straight path.

An-Nur 24:47

ۚ

They say: we believe in The God and the messenger, and we obey. Then a group of them turns away afterward. Those are not believers.

An-Nur 24:48

When they are called to The God and His messenger so that he may judge between them, a group of them turns away.

An-Nur 24:49

If the right is theirs, they come to him submissively.

An-Nur 24:50

ۚ

Is there disease in their hearts, or have they doubted, or do they fear that The God and His messenger will wrong them? Rather, they are the wrongdoers.

An-Nur 24:51

ۚ

The believers' response, when called to The God and His messenger so that he may judge between them, is only to say: we hear and obey. They are the ones who prosper.

An-Nur 24:52

Whoever obeys The God and His messenger, fears The God, and is mindful of Him—those are the successful ones.

An-Nur 24:53

ۖ ۖ ۚ

They swore by The God their strongest oaths that, if you commanded them, they would surely go out. Say: do not swear. Recognized obedience. The God is aware of what you do.

An-Nur 24:54

ۖ ۖ ۚ

Say: obey The God and obey the messenger. If you turn away, upon him is only what he has been charged with, and upon you is what you have been charged with. If you obey him, you will be guided. The messenger is responsible only for clear delivery.

An-Nur 24:55

ۚ ۚ

The God has promised those among you who have believed and done righteous deeds that He will surely make them successors in the land, as He made those before them successors; establish for them their religion, which He has approved for them; and replace their fear with security. They worship Me, associating nothing with Me. Whoever disbelieves afterward—those are the defiantly disobedient.

An-Nur 24:56

Establish prayer, give zakat, and obey the messenger, so that you may receive mercy.

An-Nur 24:57

ۚ ۖ

Do not think that those who disbelieved can thwart on earth. Their refuge is the Fire. What a wretched destination!

An-Nur 24:58

ۚ ۚ ۚ ۚ ۚ ۗ

O you who have believed, let those whom your right hands possess and those among you who have not reached puberty ask your permission at three times: before the dawn prayer, when you put aside your clothes at midday, and after the night prayer. These are three times of privacy for you. Outside them there is no blame upon you or them, as you go about among one another. Thus The God makes the signs clear to you. The God is knowing, wise.

An-Nur 24:59

ۚ ۗ

When the children among you reach puberty, let them ask permission as those before them asked permission. Thus The God makes His signs clear to you. The God is knowing, wise.

An-Nur 24:60

ۖ ۗ

Women past childbearing who have no expectation of marriage incur no blame in putting aside their garments without displaying adornment. To remain restrained is better for them. The God is hearing, knowing.

An-Nur 24:61

ۚ ۚ ۚ

There is no restriction upon the blind, the lame, the sick, or yourselves in eating from your own houses, your fathers' houses, your mothers' houses, your brothers' houses, your sisters' houses, your paternal uncles' houses, your paternal aunts' houses, your maternal uncles' houses, your maternal aunts' houses, those whose keys you possess, or your friend's. There is no blame upon you in eating together or separately. When you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from The God, blessed and good. Thus The God makes the signs clear to you, so that you may reason.

An-Nur 24:62

ۚ ۚ ۚ

The believers are only those who believe in The God and His messenger and, when with him on a collective matter, do not leave until they ask his permission. Those who ask your permission are the ones who believe in The God and His messenger. When they ask your permission for some affair of theirs, grant permission to whom you will among them and ask The God to forgive them. The God is forgiving, merciful.

An-Nur 24:63

ۚ ۚ

Do not treat the messenger's call among you like the call of one of you to another. The God knows those among you who slip away under cover. Let those who oppose his command beware lest a trial afflict them or a painful punishment afflict them.

An-Nur 24:64

ۖ ۗ

Indeed, to The God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. He knows the state you are in. On the day they are returned to Him, He will inform them of what they have done. The God knows all things.
