Qur'anic Root

Qur'anic Root H R Th

Purposeful work, preparing a bed, nurturing, and awaiting yield

1. Introduction to the Root and Its Difference from Z R Ayn

Purposeful and sustained work to prepare a bed, cultivate its capacities, and obtain a future yield. Harth emphasizes preparation, cultivation, care, waiting, and yield, while zar focuses on seed-placement and especially sprouting and growth.

Have you seen what you cultivate as harth? Is it you who make it grow, or are We the growers?

Al-Waqiah 56:63-64

Harth is not merely land or field; it is a process-oriented and goal-directed word connecting preparation, nurturing, care, time, and yield.

2. Basic Meaning and Lexical Branches

The basic meaning is employing and preparing something purposefully so that a yield or increase may appear in the future. The Qur'anic branch is cultivation, earning, and bringing about yield: preparing land, cultivating and nurturing a crop, cultivated land, plant or product, earning through effort, and investment for a future result. A secondary old lexical branch about wearing down an animal does not appear in the Qur'anic field.

3. The Material Image and Goal-Directed Nature

The image is land entering a purposeful process: preparation, softening or turning soil, placing seed, providing water, protection, timing, and harvest. Harth is future-facing: present work is done for a future result. This explains harth of the world and harth of the hereafter.

4. Known Derivatives

He prepared land for produce, cultivated, or worked toward yield.

Harth can be act, cultivated land, product, or expected yield. Harith, harrath, hirathah, mihrath, and ihtaratha are known derivatives, but the Qur'an uses only harth and tahruthun.

5. Number and Qur'anic Forms

Reference Cards for Qur'anic Derivatives

H R Th appears fourteen times: thirteen as harth and once as tahruthun. It appears as al-harth, harthakum, harthihi, hartha qawmin, hartha al-akhirah, and hartha ad-dunya. Key passages include Al-Baqarah 2:71, 2:205, 2:223, Ali Imran 3:14, 3:117, Al-Anam 6:136, 6:138, Al-Anbiya 21:78, Ash-Shura 42:20, Al-Waqiah 56:63, and Al-Qalam 68:22.

6. Tuthiru Al-Ard and Tasqi Al-Harth

It is a cow not made lowly and manageable, so as to stir the earth or water the harth.

Al-Baqarah 2:71

The verse distinguishes stirring soil from watering harth. Ard is soil itself; harth is land or product inside a productive process. Itharah may be mechanical stirring; harth includes the goal of cultivation and future product.

7. Harth and Zar in Surat Al-Waqiah

Have you seen what you cultivate as harth? Is it you who make it grow, or are We the growers?

Al-Waqiah 56:63-64

Tahruthun belongs to human action: preparing, working, placing seed, watering, caring, and seeking yield. Zar highlights the realization of growth, which the human being does not independently create.

8. Al-Harth Wa An-Nasl

And when he turns away, he strives in the earth to corrupt in it and destroy the harth and the lineage.

Al-Baqarah 2:205

Harth and nasl place food production and continuity of life beside one another. Destroying harth can include destroying cultivation, crop, productive resources, and the result of agricultural effort.

9. Nisaukum Harthun Lakum

Your women are harth for you; so come to your harth as you willed, and send forward for yourselves.

Al-Baqarah 2:223

A root study should not reduce harth here to a mere field. The word includes readiness, productive capacity, nurturing, preservation, timing, care, and responsibility for future yield. It does not by itself settle the exact meaning of fatu, the range of anna, or all legal and sexual rulings. Those require separate study.

10. Harth of the Hereafter and Harth of the World

Whoever wills the harth of the hereafter, We increase for him in his harth; and whoever wills the harth of the world, We give him from it, but he has no share in the hereafter.

Ash-Shura 42:20

Yuridu connects harth with will, chosen destination, and directed effort. The harth of the hereafter receives increase within the harth; the harth of the world receives only from it. Harth itself is value-neutral; value comes from destination, method, and result.

11. Al-Anam Wa Al-Harth

and livestock and harth.

Ali Imran 3:14

Here harth can include agricultural lands, cultivations, and products. Livestock and harth are two bases of productive economy.

12. The Destruction of Harth

like a wind in which there is severe cold; it strikes the harth of a people who wronged themselves, and destroys it.

Ali Imran 3:117

Hartha qawmin refers to the cultivation, product, or gathered result of agricultural work. The image rests on the vulnerability of long work before harvest.

13. Harth and Livestock in Human Divisions

And they assigned to The God a share from what He had multiplied and spread of harth and livestock.

Al-Anam 6:136

And they said: These are livestock and harth made forbidden.

Al-Anam 6:138

Harth beside livestock indicates cultivated resources that may become subjects of apportionment, prohibition, or use.

14. Judgment Concerning Harth

when the two were judging concerning the harth, when the sheep of the people entered it by night.

Al-Anbiya 21:78

The pronoun fihi shows that al-harth can be a cultivated place or product damaged by sheep. The word itself does not specify the exact type of agricultural place.

15. Ighdu Ala Harthikum

Go early in the morning to your harth, if you are going to cut it.

Al-Qalam 68:22

Sarimin speaks of cutting and harvesting. Harthikum is cultivation, garden, or product-complex ready for harvest.

16. Semantic Extension from Act to Place and Yield

Harth covers act and process, place or bed, and plant, product, or yield. These are not separate meanings but stages or dimensions of one process. A fixed translation such as “field” cannot cover all Qur'anic usages.

17. Syntactic Structures, Translation, and Conclusion

what you cultivate or prepare for yield

and it does not water the harth

and destroys the harth and lineage

Harth differs from zar, itharah, kasb, nasl, hasd, sarm, and ghars. It is purposeful, future-facing work that begins with preparation and nurturing and reaches yield. In the Qur'an, harth can be act, bed, cultivation, product, or expected yield. Its fixed elements are goal-directedness, preparation, nurturing, care, time, and future yield.
