Qur'anic Root

Qur'anic Root Q R B

Drawing near, being near, shortening distance, entering a boundary, and the station of nearness

Important Forms of This Root

Foundational Meaning

The root ق ر ب begins from the meaning of drawing near, being near, and distance becoming shorter. Fundamentally, it indicates the shortening of distance between two things, whether the distance is spatial, temporal, kinship-based, legal, rank-based, or in the relation between the human being and The God.

قُرْب means nearness; قَرِيب means near; أَقْرَب means nearer; قُرْبَى is kinship-nearness; قُرْبَان is something offered for seeking nearness; and مُقَرَّبُون are those who have been brought into the station of nearness.

Important Forms

Important forms of this root in the Qur'an and Arabic include قُرْب, يَقْرَب, قَرَّبَ, اقْتَرَبَ, قَرِيب, أَقْرَب, قُرْبَى, قُرْبَان, قُرُبَات, قُرْبَة, مَقْرَبَة, and مُقَرَّبُون.

The simple verb قَرُبَ or يَقْرَب indicates becoming near or being near. قَرَّبَ in Form II means bringing near, presenting, or offering something for nearness.

اقْتَرَبَ in Form VIII shows the nearing of an event or time with a stronger sense of movement and arrival. قَرِيب is the adjective of nearness. أَقْرَب is comparative and, depending on context, may mean nearer, more fitting, or more appropriate because it is closer to the intended end.

قُرْبَى mostly refers to family and kinship-nearness. قُرْبَان is a means or offering brought for seeking nearness. مُقَرَّبُون are those who have been brought near and placed in the station of nearness.

Linguistic Note

The linguistic center of ق ر ب is the reduction of distance and entry into the zone of nearness. This root does not only express physical distance.

Sometimes a person approaches an object; sometimes a human being approaches the boundary of an act; sometimes the time of an event draws near; sometimes kinship brings people into a circle of responsibility; and sometimes nearness points to rank and station with The God.

Therefore, ق ر ب begins from a simple spatial image, but in the Qur'an it expands into legal, ethical, temporal, family, and divine fields.

Material Image of the Root

The material image of this root is clear: something that had been distant moves closer to a point; the distance between two things becomes shorter; or a person enters the boundary and zone of something.

A traveler nearing home, a hand approaching an object, time drawing close to an event, or a person being near by kinship can all be understood from this initial image.

In the Qur'an, this material image is used with precision: sometimes approaching something is forbidden because entering its boundary is dangerous; sometimes the nearness of an event is announced; and sometimes the nearness of The God to the human being does not mean place, but encompassing, knowledge, and immediacy.

Older and Classical Arabic Usage

In classical Arabic usage, this root operates in the fields of place, time, kinship, rank, and ritual offering. قَرِيب can be near in place or time. قُرْبَى relates to blood-nearness and kinship connection. قُرْبَان refers to something presented in order to draw near to a greater authority or be accepted.

In a later expanded version, a reliable witness from pre-Islamic poetry or early Arabic usage may be added.

Not Approaching a Boundary

In the Qur'an, one of the most important uses of ق ر ب is the prohibition against approaching the boundary of an act or thing. In such cases, the Qur'an does not only forbid the final act itself; it also blocks approach to the zone that leads to it:

وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ

And do not approach this tree. Al-Baqarah 2:35

In this verse, the prohibition is "do not approach," not only "do not eat." This shows that ق ر ب can express the boundary of a protected zone: a place where entry brings the human being closer to the forbidden act.

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَىٰ

And do not approach zina. Al-Isra 17:32

Here ق ر ب is very precise. The Qur'an does not only prohibit the act itself. It also blocks approach to the path, setting, stimulation, and environment that lead toward it. In such contexts, لَا تَقْرَبُوا is the language of boundary-making.

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا مَالَ الْيَتِيمِ إِلَّا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ

And do not approach the wealth of the orphan except by what is best. Al-An'am 6:152

Here nearness means financial contact, management, disposal, or entry into the sphere of the wealth. But because an exception is given, not every nearness is forbidden. Corrupt, exploitative, or harmful nearness is forbidden. Reforming and better nearness is accepted within the framework of trust.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَعْلَمُوا مَا تَقُولُونَ

O you who have believed, do not approach salat while you are intoxicated, until you know what you are saying. An-Nisa 4:43

Here لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ means do not enter the boundary of salat and stand for it until your awareness in speech and presence returns.

Temporal Nearness

The second field is temporal nearness. Here a future event is pictured as having come closer to the human being:

اقْتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمْ وَهُمْ فِي غَفْلَةٍ مُعْرِضُونَ

Their account has drawn near to the people, while they are in heedlessness, turning away. Al-Anbiya 21:1

اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ

The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split. Al-Qamar 54:1

In these verses, the Qur'an uses Form VIII: اقْتَرَبَ. Compared with simple "being near," this structure highlights movement and arrival. The account and the Hour are not merely described as near; they appear to be moving toward the human being and swallowing the remaining distance while the human being may remain heedless.

The Nearness of The God to the Human Being

The third field is the nearness of The God to the human being. This nearness must not be reduced to spatial or bodily distance:

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ

And when My servants ask you about Me, then I am near. Al-Baqarah 2:186

قَرِيب in this verse indicates the nearness of The God in response, knowledge, hearing prayer, and immediacy in relation to the servant.

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِ نَفْسُهُ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ

And We have certainly created the human being, and We know what his self whispers within him, and We are nearer to him than the jugular vein. Qaf 50:16

This nearness is not the nearness of one body to another body. The verse speaks of creation, knowledge of the inward self, and encompassing awareness. The nearness of The God here means sustaining presence, encompassing knowledge, immediate awareness, and the absence of any real distance between the human being and the knowledge of The God.

Qurba and Kinship-Nearness

The fourth field is kinship and social nearness. The Qur'an uses قُرْبَى for close relatives and kin:

وَآتَى الْمَالَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِ ذَوِي الْقُرْبَىٰ

And he gave wealth, despite loving it, to close relatives. Al-Baqarah 2:177

قُرْبَى here is family nearness. This nearness brings responsibility, but it does not create absolute value or inherent superiority. The relative enters a circle of attention and right because of nearness, not because lineage replaces mindfulness and righteous action.

Qurban and Seeking Nearness

The fifth field is qurban and seeking nearness. Qurban is something offered for drawing near, being accepted, or seeking nearness:

إِذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا وَلَمْ يُتَقَبَّلْ مِنَ الْآخَرِ

When the two of them offered an offering of nearness; it was accepted from one of them and not accepted from the other. Al-Ma'idah 5:27

قُرْبَان in this verse is not merely a material object. It is a means of seeking nearness. But the means itself does not guarantee true nearness. Acceptance depends on inward truth and taqwa, not merely on presenting something.

In another verse, the same concept appears in the critique of imagined and false intermediaries:

فَلَوْلَا نَصَرَهُمُ الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ قُرْبَانًا آلِهَةً

So why did those whom they took besides The God as gods, as a means of nearness, not help them? Al-Ahqaf 46:28

Here qurban means a means by which people imagined they would be brought near to The God. The Qur'an shows that fabricated nearness, if not built upon truth and the command of The God, collapses in the moment of need.

The Station of Nearness and the Muqarrabun

The sixth field is the station of nearness and the muqarrabun:

فَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ

Then if he is among those brought near. Al-Waqi'ah 56:88

مُقَرَّبُون are those who have been brought into the station of nearness. In this form, nearness is no longer only the initial act of the human being; it is a position and rank granted to the person. Qurban is a means of seeking nearness; the muqarrab is the one for whom nearness has been realized and who has been placed in the station of nearness.

Distinguishing Similar Uses

وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَٰذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ concerns approaching the boundary of a specific prohibition. وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَىٰ concerns approaching the path and environment of a destructive act.

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا مَالَ الْيَتِيمِ concerns financial contact and management. لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَىٰ concerns entering the boundary of salat while awareness is impaired.

اقْتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمْ concerns the temporal and certain nearness of the account. فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ concerns the nearness of The God in prayer, response, and encompassing knowledge. All of these draw from the core of reduced distance, but their translation must remain faithful to context.

Grammatical and Structural Notes

Structurally, prepositions and verbal forms are important in ق ر ب. Nearness with مِنْ can show comparison or relation. Nearness with إِلَى highlights direction toward a destination.

لَا تَقْرَبُوا usually forbids entering the boundary of something, not only the final act itself. اقْتَرَبَ in Form VIII gives the nearing of an event a more living and dynamic sense.

قَرَّبَ in Form II means bringing near or presenting something for nearness, as seen in قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا.

Difference From Nearby Roots

د ن و also relates to nearness, but often shows nearness that is accessible, hanging low, lowered, or brought near to the field of use and contact, such as nearby shades or fruits. ق ر ب focuses more on the relation of distance and entry into a boundary.

ز ل ف relates to rank-based, stage-based nearness, or being brought forward to a nearer station. ح ض ر indicates presence in a scene or at the time of an event, not necessarily the shortening of distance.

ل ص ق is nearness with sticking and adhesion. أ ت ي means coming; coming may lead to nearness, but its own meaning is not the shortening of distance. ب ع د is the primary opposite of ق ر ب, because it indicates distance and remoteness.

Translation Suggestions for Forqan

قُرْبَى: close kinship, close relatives.

قُرْبَان: offering of nearness, means of seeking nearness; not merely sacrifice.

مُقَرَّبُون: those brought near, people of the station of nearness.

لَا تَقْرَبُوا: do not approach, do not enter its boundary, do not approach the path toward it; depending on context.

اقْتَرَبَ: drew near, came close to occurring, its remaining distance became short.

Linguistic Summary

The root ق ر ب indicates drawing near, being near, and the reduction of distance. Its material image is the shortening of distance between two points or entering the boundary of something.

The Qur'an expands this root into several fields: setting boundaries against certain acts, the nearing of the time of account and the Hour, the nearness of The God in encompassing knowledge and response, kinship and social responsibility, offerings for seeking nearness, and the station of those brought near.

Its difference from dunuww, zulf, hudur, lasaq, and ityan is that ق ر ب focuses most directly on the relation of nearness itself, the shortening of distance, and entry into the field of nearness.
