Qur'anic Root

Qur'anic Root L B S

Wearing, covering, layering, mixing, and making something ambiguous.

Important Forms

Core Meaning

The root ل ب س points, at its base, to a covering or layer being placed over something else; a layer that can cover the body, protect it, adorn it, or change its visible boundary before an outside gaze. From this field comes the meaning of clothing and covering.

But the same root is also used in the field of knowledge and recognition. When something is placed over truth, or truth is mixed with falsehood, clear recognition disappears and the matter becomes ambiguous for the human being. Therefore libas and talbis are not unrelated meanings. In both, a secondary layer sits upon an original layer; sometimes for protection and privacy, and sometimes for covering, distorting, and making recognition difficult.

In the Qur'an, L B S appears in two main fields. First, material and spiritual covering: body clothing, the clothing of taqwa, the clothing of night, spousal clothing, battle covering, Paradise clothing, and the clothing of hunger and fear. Second, covering or making truth ambiguous: mixing truth with falsehood, being in labs about new creation, or a society becoming entangled in factions and confusion.

So the core of the root is covering and layering. If this layering moves in the path of truth, it brings protection, calm, privacy, and beauty. If it moves in the path of falsehood, it produces ambiguity, corruption of recognition, and social disorder.

Important Forms

لَبِسَ / يَلْبَسُ is used in the meaning of wearing: putting something on as clothing.

And they wear green garments of sundus and istabraq.

Al-Kahf 18:31

لباس is a noun and points to covering, garment, or something that covers a human being or an environment:

قَدْ أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًا يُوَارِي سَوْآتِكُمْ وَرِيشًا

We have sent down for you clothing that covers your exposed vulnerabilities, and adornment.

Al-A'raf 7:26

لباس التقوى is an important phrase that carries covering from the level of the body to the level of character and inward life:

وَلِبَاسُ التَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ

And the clothing of taqwa, that is better.

Al-A'raf 7:26

لبوس points to battle covering or armor:

وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ صَنْعَةَ لَبُوسٍ لَكُمْ لِتُحْصِنَكُمْ مِنْ بَأْسِكُمْ

And We taught him the craft of a covering/armor for you, to protect you from your battle harm.

Al-Anbiya 21:80

تلبسون appears in the meaning of making ambiguous, covering, and mixing:

وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ

And do not mix/make ambiguous the truth with falsehood.

Al-Baqarah 2:42

لَبَسْنَا / لَلَبَسْنَا appears in the meaning of making something ambiguous:

وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ مَلَكًا لَجَعَلْنَاهُ رَجُلًا وَلَلَبَسْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مَا يَلْبِسُونَ

If We had made him an angel, We would have made him a man, and We would have made ambiguous for them what they themselves make ambiguous.

Al-An'am 6:9

يَلْبِسَكُمْ appears in the meaning of mixing, making people into factions, or placing society in a state of disorder:

أَوْ يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ

Or He may mix you into factions and make some of you taste the harm of others.

Al-An'am 6:65

لَبْس is a noun of state and points to ambiguity, uncertainty, mental mixture, and inability to recognize clearly:

بَلْ هُمْ فِي لَبْسٍ مِنْ خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ

Rather, they are in ambiguity about a new creation.

Qaf 50:15

Linguistic Note

The semantic core of L B S is one layer being placed over another layer. This layer may be material, such as a garment over the body; spiritual, such as taqwa over a person's character; environmental, such as night over the world; social, such as hunger and fear covering the life of a community; or epistemic, such as falsehood sitting over truth and making it ambiguous for people.

In material clothing, the second layer covers the body, regulates its contact with the outside, protects it from harm or gaze, and sometimes gives it beauty. In epistemic talbis, the second layer also sits upon truth, but this time its function is not protection; its function is to cloud recognition. The listener no longer sees truth in a pure form, but sees it from behind a layer of falsehood, wrong interpretation, distortion, or mixture.

So there is a deep connection between libas and talbis. Both deal with layering. The difference is in direction and result. Clothing of the body and taqwa can be protection; talbis of truth with falsehood is corruption of recognition.

Material Image

The material image of the root begins with clothing. A human being covers his body with a garment. Clothing is close to the body; it lies upon it, touches it, preserves it, and mediates between the body and the outside environment. The outside observer often sees the clothing first, not the body itself. Clothing, therefore, is not only a covering; it is a layer that changes contact, visibility, and protection.

In the spousal relationship, this image becomes close and deep:

هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَهُنَّ

They are clothing for you, and you are clothing for them.

Al-Baqarah 2:187

Clothing here is not merely covering the body; it conveys closeness, calm, protection, covering faults, intimate contact, and mutual privacy. Each one becomes the closest human covering for the other.

In the epistemic branch, the image is this: a clear truth exists, but a layer of falsehood or ambiguity is placed over it. Truth is not destroyed, but its reflection for the viewer changes. This is the field of talbis: not necessarily erasing truth, but covering it or mixing it in such a way that pure recognition becomes difficult.

Classical Usage

In classical Arabic, libas refers to clothing and body covering. Labs can also refer to wearing a garment. But the same root is also used for confusion, mixing, and ambiguity. When a matter becomes iltabasa for someone, the boundaries of recognition are not clear for him, and the matter has become mixed with or covered by something else.

This connection between covering and ambiguity is clear in human experience. What is covered is no longer seen directly. What is mixed with something else is no longer seen as pure and separate. Through this pathway, L B S can speak about body clothing, the covering of night, the spiritual covering of taqwa, and covering truth with falsehood.

Here the main reliance is on Qur'anic usage, because the Qur'an uses this root across many fields: body clothing, the clothing of spouses, the clothing of taqwa, the clothing of night, armor, Paradise clothing, hunger and fear, and talbis of truth with falsehood.

Body Clothing: Covering Exposure and Bringing Adornment

One of the most basic uses of the root is libas in the meaning of body covering:

يَا بَنِي آدَمَ قَدْ أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاسًا يُوَارِي سَوْآتِكُمْ وَرِيشًا

O children of Adam, We have sent down for you clothing that covers your exposed vulnerabilities, and adornment.

Al-A'raf 7:26

In this verse, clothing has two functions: covering saw'at and providing rish, meaning adornment and beautification. Covering in the Qur'an is not a cold physical matter only; it is part of human dignity, modesty, protection, and adornment.

But the verse immediately brings the deeper level:

وَلِبَاسُ التَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ

And the clothing of taqwa, that is better.

Al-A'raf 7:26

This transition is important. Body clothing is necessary, but not enough. A human being may cover his body while remaining inwardly and ethically uncovered. The clothing of taqwa means a covering of vigilance, restraint, and self-guarding that protects the human being from corruption, shamelessness, injustice, and breaking limits.

Clothing of Taqwa: The Protective Inner Layer

The clothing of taqwa is one of the most precise expansions of this root:

وَلِبَاسُ التَّقْوَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ

And the clothing of taqwa, that is better.

Al-A'raf 7:26

Taqwa here is like a covering that does not merely cover the body, but protects the form of the human being. This inner covering protects a person from recklessness, boundarylessness, moral exposure, and the infiltration of corruption.

This phrase shows that the Qur'an sees a relationship between outer covering and inner covering, but does not make them the same. Outward clothing is necessary, but the clothing of taqwa is better; because if the outside is covered while the inside remains without taqwa, the human being is still unprotected.

Spouses as Clothing: Closeness, Covering, Calm, and Mutual Protection

In the verse of fasting, spouses are called clothing for one another:

هُنَّ لِبَاسٌ لَكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ لِبَاسٌ لَهُنَّ

They are clothing for you, and you are clothing for them.

Al-Baqarah 2:187

Clothing is the closest covering of the human being. It touches the body, covers it, protects it, and gives it calm and privacy. When the Qur'an calls woman and man, in the spousal relationship, clothing for one another, it points to a mutual relationship: each one covers the other, protects the other, gives calm to the other, and does not expose the other's faults before people.

In this verse, clothing is not one-sided. The Qur'an does not say only that the woman is clothing for the man; it says they are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. This reciprocity shows closeness, responsibility, and two-way covering.

Night as Clothing: Environmental and Temporal Covering

The Qur'an also calls night clothing:

وَهُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا وَالنَّوْمَ سُبَاتًا وَجَعَلَ النَّهَارَ نُشُورًا

And He is the One who made the night clothing for you, and sleep a stilling/rest, and the day a rising.

Al-Furqan 25:47

And We made the night clothing.

Al-Naba 78:10

Here clothing points to an encompassing covering. Night covers the earth and human beings, calms visible movements, and prepares the ground for sleep and renewal. This clothing is not body clothing; it is the clothing of time and environment. Night is drawn over the world like a covering, moving the human being from light, activity, and daytime dispersion into calm.

Battle Clothing: Protective Covering

In Surat Al-Anbiya, labus appears for battle covering or armor:

وَعَلَّمْنَاهُ صَنْعَةَ لَبُوسٍ لَكُمْ لِتُحْصِنَكُمْ مِنْ بَأْسِكُمْ

And We taught him the craft of a covering/armor for you, to protect you from your battle harm.

Al-Anbiya 21:80

Here clothing does not mean adornment or ordinary covering; it is protective covering. Labus protects the body against striking, battle, and harm. This use shows that the field of L B S is not only covering exposure or adornment. Covering can also be shield and protection.

Paradise Clothing: Covering of Honor and Favor

Several verses mention wearing clothing in Paradise:

وَيَلْبَسُونَ ثِيَابًا خُضْرًا مِنْ سُنْدُسٍ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍ

And they wear green garments of sundus and istabraq.

Al-Kahf 18:31

They will be adorned there with bracelets of gold and pearl, and their clothing there is silk.

Al-Hajj 22:23

In this context, clothing is a sign of honor, favor, beauty, and rest. Paradise clothing is not merely body covering; it is part of the image of final honoring and ease.

Clothing of Hunger and Fear: An Encompassing Covering Over Society

In Surat Al-Nahl, clothing appears in a very deep and non-material meaning:

فَأَذَاقَهَا اللَّهُ لِبَاسَ الْجُوعِ وَالْخَوْفِ بِمَا كَانُوا يَصْنَعُونَ

So The God made it taste the clothing of hunger and fear because of what they used to make.

Al-Nahl 16:112

The phrase لباس الجوع والخوف is very important. Hunger and fear are not material garments, yet the Qur'an calls them clothing because they settle over people's lives like an encompassing covering. Just as clothing surrounds the body, hunger and fear surround the space of life, feeling, movement, safety, and social relations.

The phrase فأذاقها makes the experience even more intense. Hunger and fear are not merely seen or known; they are tasted. That is, they move from a mental concept into a tangible and lived experience. A society that sinks into such clothing experiences the effect of hunger and insecurity in every contact with its environment.

Mixing Truth With Falsehood: Epistemic Talbis

One of the most important ethical and epistemic uses of this root is the prohibition against mixing truth with falsehood:

وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُوا الْحَقَّ وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

And do not mix truth with falsehood, and do not conceal truth while you know.

Al-Baqarah 2:42

Here تلبسوا means to cover, mix, or make truth ambiguous with falsehood. Truth is clear in itself, but when it is covered or mixed with falsehood, recognizing it becomes difficult for people. This verse places two acts together: mixing truth with falsehood and concealing truth. That means truth is sometimes not completely removed; rather, it is mixed with falsehood so that it loses its effect.

The same meaning appears in Ali 'Imran:

يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لِمَ تَلْبِسُونَ الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

O People of the Book, why do you mix truth with falsehood and conceal truth while you know?

Ali 'Imran 3:71

In this use, L B S is one of the important roots for understanding epistemic corruption. Corruption is not always open denial of truth. Sometimes more dangerous than denial is mixing truth with falsehood, because part of truth remains, but it is placed inside a layer of falsehood, ambiguity, or distortion.

Making the Matter Ambiguous for People

In Surat Al-An'am, L B S appears regarding the demand for an angel as messenger:

وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَاهُ مَلَكًا لَجَعَلْنَاهُ رَجُلًا وَلَلَبَسْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ مَا يَلْبِسُونَ

If We had made him an angel, We would have made him a man, and We would have made ambiguous for them what they themselves make ambiguous.

Al-An'am 6:9

Here the issue is not merely wearing clothes; it is the ambiguity around the reality of the messenger. Even if an angel had been sent, to communicate with humans he would have come in human form; then the same objection and ambiguity would have continued. The verse shows that some ambiguities do not come from the structure of truth itself, but from the way the audience looks and from its wrong demands.

The phrase ما يلبسون shows that they themselves are involved in talbis; they create a kind of mixture and confusion, or sink into it.

Social Talbis: Becoming Factions and Tasting One Another's Harm

In Surat Al-An'am, the root appears in the context of social punishment:

قُلْ هُوَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَىٰ أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابًا مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ أَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِكُمْ أَوْ يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بَعْضٍ

Say: He is able to send upon you punishment from above you or from beneath your feet, or to mix you into factions and make some of you taste the harm of others.

Al-An'am 6:65

In this verse, يلبسكم شيعا should not be understood only as “make you several groups” in a simple administrative sense. The root meaning shows that becoming factions here is accompanied by mixture, confusion, and loss of clear social boundaries. Society becomes entangled and hostile groups, and then يذيق بعضكم بأس بعض happens: some taste the harm of others.

Here talbis is not only intellectual; it is social and political. A society that loses truth, justice, and right connection may sink into layers of factionalism, fanaticism, and confusion. The boundary of truth and falsehood inside society becomes cloudy, and internal forces wear one another down instead of reforming.

Labs About New Creation

In Surat Qaf, labs comes in the meaning of ambiguity and doubt:

أَفَعَيِينَا بِالْخَلْقِ الْأَوَّلِ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِي لَبْسٍ مِنْ خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ

Did We become unable with the first creation? Rather, they are in ambiguity about a new creation.

Qaf 50:15

Here لبس is a mental and epistemic state. They are in ambiguity and doubt about the new creation, meaning re-creation and resurrection. This labs does not come from any inability on the part of The God; it comes from their inability to understand the relation between the first creation and creation again.

A mind covered by layers of denial, habit, and materialist imagination does not see the new creation clearly. Labs here is therefore not material covering, but mental and perceptual covering.

Similar Uses

L B S in the Qur'an must be carefully distinguished. When it speaks about body clothing, it has the meaning of physical covering. When it speaks about the clothing of taqwa, it is ethical and spiritual covering. When it speaks about spouses, it is mutual covering, closeness, calm, and preservation of privacy. When it speaks about night, it is environmental and temporal covering. When it speaks about hunger and fear, it is an encompassing experience. When it speaks about truth and falsehood, it is mixing and making ambiguous.

Therefore all cases should not be translated with one fixed word. Libas is sometimes garment, sometimes covering, sometimes privacy, sometimes armor, sometimes an encompassing experience, and sometimes a metaphor of surrounding. Labs and talbis are sometimes covering truth, sometimes mixing truth with falsehood, and sometimes falling into ambiguity.

The clothing of taqwa is not the same as body clothing. Body clothing covers outward exposure; the clothing of taqwa covers ethical and inward unprotectedness. The clothing of night is not human clothing; night covers the environment. The clothing of hunger and fear is also not a garment; it is an experience that surrounds society.

Grammar and Structure

In ولا تلبسوا الحق بالباطل, the letter باء in بالباطل is important. Truth is covered or mixed with falsehood. Falsehood becomes a means for hiding, contaminating, or making truth ambiguous. This structure shows that truth has not been completely removed; it has been mixed with falsehood.

In وتكتموا الحق وأنتم تعلمون, concealing truth comes after talbis. This shows that talbis and kitman are two close but different methods. In talbis, truth is mixed with falsehood or covered; in kitman, truth is concealed.

In هن لباس لكم وأنتم لباس لهن, the structure is reciprocal. Each side is clothing for the other. This grammatical reciprocity shows that the spousal relation in this verse is not only the right of one side over the other; it is covering, closeness, and mutual protection.

In لباس الجوع والخوف, the genitive construction creates an encompassing experience. Hunger and fear are placed over society like clothing. This construction should not be reduced to “clothing made of hunger” in a material sense; it means hunger and fear surrounded them like an encompassing covering.

In يلبسكم شيعا, the object كم and the state شيعا show that society itself is placed in a state of factional mixture. The meaning is not merely administrative division or simple grouping; the continuation of the verse explains it as a trouble-making mixture and mutual tasting of harm.

In في لبس من خلق جديد, the letter في shows that they are inside a state of labs. Ambiguity has not simply passed over them from outside; it has surrounded the space of their perception.

Nearby Roots

ك س و is close to covering with clothing or garments. Kiswa more often points to giving clothing or material covering. Libas in L B S is broader and can be bodily, ethical, temporal, social, or epistemic covering.

غ ش ي points to covering from above or encompassing. Ghishyan more often carries the state of something covering over another thing; L B S, in addition to covering, carries the meaning of close wearing and also mixing and ambiguity.

س ت ر is close to covering and hiding. S T R focuses more on hiding from sight. Clothing can be a form of satr, but it is not always only hiding; sometimes it is adornment, protection, calm, or closeness.

خ م ر is close to covering, especially covering the head or covering the mind in the branch of khamr. L B S is broader and includes clothing, spiritual covering, and making something ambiguous.

خ ل ط points to mixing and blending. L B S in the meaning of talbis is close to khalt, but in L B S the element of covering and making ambiguous is stronger. Khalt may be only mixture; talbis usually covers the boundary of recognition.

م ز ج points to mixing and combining, such as temperament or the mixing of liquids. Talbis carries a stronger epistemic and ambiguity-producing weight, especially with truth and falsehood.

ش ب ه is close to likeness and ambiguity. Shubhah comes from likeness: something becomes like another thing and recognition becomes difficult. Labs can create shubhah by covering or mixing.

ك ت م points to concealing. In Al-Baqarah 2:42 and Ali 'Imran 3:71, kitman appears alongside talbis. Talbis means mixing or covering truth with falsehood; kitman means concealing truth.

ز ي ن points to adorning and making something appear beautiful. Clothing sometimes has adornment, but L B S is not only adornment. Clothing can be covering, protection, taqwa, or even hunger and fear.

Summary

The root L B S points to wearing, covering, surrounding with a covering, and in another branch, mixing and making something ambiguous. The shared core of these uses is a secondary layer being placed over an original layer. If this layer moves in the path of protection, it forms body clothing, the clothing of taqwa, spousal clothing, night, armor, and the covering of honor. If it moves in the path of corrupted recognition, it covers truth with falsehood, clouds the boundary of recognition, and sinks a human being or society into labs.

On the material level, the root begins from body clothing: a close covering that covers and protects the body and regulates the body's relation with the outside environment. On the epistemic level, the same image reaches talbis of truth with falsehood: truth is not destroyed, but it is placed under a layer of falsehood or ambiguity.

The difference between L B S and S T R is that S T R is more about hiding, while libas is covering, closeness, protection, adornment, and sometimes ambiguity-making. Its difference from Kh L T is that khalt is simply mixing, while talbis is a mixing that covers recognition. Its difference from K T M is that kitman hides truth, while talbis mixes truth with falsehood or clouds it under a layer of falsehood.

In Forqan translation, L B S should not always be translated with one fixed word. Depending on context, “wearing,” “covering,” “clothing,” “cover,” “privacy,” “armor,” “encompassing,” “mixing,” “making ambiguous,” “clouding recognition,” or “placing into ambiguity” may be more precise.
