Qur'anic Root

Qur'anic Root D N W

Being near, drawing near, being lower, and being more present.

1. Short Introduction to the Root

The root د ن و in the Qur'an denotes being near, drawing near, or bringing near.

This nearness is not always spatial. According to the structure and context of the verse, it can take one of these forms:

nearer in place;

nearer in time;

less in amount;

lower in rank;

within reach;

nearer as a path toward the realization of a specific result.

The word الدُّنْيَا also comes from this root. In the expression الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا, it points to the near and present life in contrast with الآخرة, the later life.

Therefore, الدُّنْيَا in its base meaning does not mean low, vile, or impure. The Qur'an may describe the provision of this life as little, deceptive, or unstable, but those meanings come from the full structure of the verses and their accompanying words, not from the root د ن و by itself.

The short definition of the root is:

د ن و denotes being near, drawing near, or bringing near. According to context, this nearness may be spatial, temporal, quantitative, rank-based, or result-oriented, and it can produce meanings such as nearer, less, lower, more present, or more accessible.

2. Important Forms and Derivatives of the Root

دَنَا

He drew near; his distance decreased.

يُدْنِينَ

They bring near, bring close upon themselves, or draw down over themselves.

دَانٍ

Near or within reach.

دَانِيَة

Near or within reach; the feminine form of دَانٍ.

أَدْنَى

Nearer. According to the criterion of comparison, this form may be translated as: nearer; less; lower; earlier; more suitable for realizing a result.

الدُّنْيَا

The feminine form of أَدْنَى: nearer or nearest. In Qur'anic constructions: الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا: the near and present life; السَّمَاء الدُّنْيَا: the nearer sky; الْعُدْوَة الدُّنْيَا: the nearer bank.

4. The Semantic Core of the Root

The core of this root may be stated as follows:

the smallness of distance between two things, the decrease of that distance, or one thing being in a position nearer than another.

To understand each usage, one must identify the field in which the distance is being measured.

Spatial distance

Something draws near to something else in place: ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ

Distance of access

Something is so near that access to it becomes easy: قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٌ

Quantitative distance

One amount is lower than another amount: وَلَا أَدْنَىٰ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَا أَكْثَرَ

Rank distance

Something stands in a lower rank or before a greater rank: الْعَذَابِ الْأَدْنَىٰ دُونَ الْعَذَابِ الْأَكْبَرِ

Temporal distance

The present life is nearer to the human being than the life of the Hereafter: الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا

Distance from a result

One method is nearer to realizing a specific result: ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ

Thus the root د ن و has one base meaning, but when the criterion of comparison changes, it reaches different translations.

5. The Material Image of the Root

The base material image is two things whose distance from one another is small or becomes smaller.

It may be that:

a person draws near to another person or place;

a fruit is near the human hand and ready to be picked;

a covering is brought close over the body;

one bank is nearer than another bank;

one amount is less than another amount.

In this image, nearness can make access easier. For this reason, being at hand is one natural consequence of nearness.

But at hand, immediate, or hastened should not become the fixed definition of every use of the root. These meanings appear only in contexts where temporal nearness or immediate accessibility is intended.

Nor should this linguistic image be turned into physical, cosmic, or psychological theories. The root speaks of a relation of nearness, not of a scientific mechanism by which distance decreases.

6. Use of the Root in Arabic

In Arabic:

دَنَا مِنْهُ means he drew near to him or it.

أَدْنَاهُ means he brought him or it near.

دَانٍ means near.

دَانِيَة is the feminine form of دَانٍ.

أَدْنَى is the comparative form and basically conveys nearer. However, Persian and English cannot always translate it in every context with that one word.

For example:

أَدْنَى الْأَرْضِ: the nearest land;

وَلَا أَدْنَىٰ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ: less than that;

الَّذِي هُوَ أَدْنَىٰ: that which is lower;

أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ: nearer to being recognized.

The word الدُّنْيَا is the feminine form of أدنى. In الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا, life is described as nearer and more present.

One must also distinguish د ن و from the hamzated د ن أ. د ن أ belongs to the field of baseness and vileness. Their similarity in writing must not cause الدُّنْيَا to be translated as the low life without contextual evidence.

7. Challenges of Understanding and Translation

Automatically translating الدُّنْيَا as the low world

This translation inserts an ethical judgment into the word itself. الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا is, at its base, the near and present life in contrast with the Hereafter. The Qur'an can critique this life from the angle of instability, deception, or being preferred over the Hereafter; but the word dunyā by itself does not mean low and impure.

The Qur'an also speaks of positive matters in this same life: good in this life; pure provisions in this life; help in this life; and the honored standing of Jesus in this life and the Hereafter.

Thus the Qur'anic critique is not directed at the earth itself, the body, family, work, beauty, or blessing. The critique is directed at being deceived, treating the present life as the final goal, and preferring it over the Hereafter.

Translating every use of أَدْنَى as lower

أدنى does not have one fixed meaning such as lower. In al-Mujādilah 58:7 it means less. In al-Anfāl 8:42 it means nearer. In al-Baqarah 2:282 it means nearer to the realization of a result. In al-Baqarah 2:61, because it stands against خير, it gives the sense of lower or less valuable. The criterion of comparison must therefore be extracted from the verse itself.

Conflating nearer and lower

Being nearer does not always mean being lower. السَّمَاء الدُّنْيَا is the nearer sky, not the worse sky. الْعُدْوَة الدُّنْيَا is the nearer bank, not the vile bank. Lower is defensible only in a context where quantitative, rank-based, or value comparison shows it.

Putting passing away into the base meaning of dunyā

The worldly life is limited and passing in comparison with the Hereafter, but passing is not the direct translation of الدُّنْيَا. This meaning is understood from structures such as: مَتَاعُ الدُّنْيَا قَلِيلٌ; مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ; وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ. If all these meanings are placed inside الدُّنْيَا itself, the role of the other words in the verse is ignored.

Turning أدنى أن into a vague judgment

In the structure أدنى أن, the verse usually presents a path or ruling as nearer to a specific result. Translating it as this is better may convey part of the sense, but it hides the precise relation between the measure and the result. Clearer translations are: nearer to that; more suitable for that; more likely to lead to this result. The third is explanatory, not a literal translation.

8. Methodological Note

In examining each use, one must ask:

What is near to what?

What is the criterion of comparison?

Is the nearness spatial, temporal, quantitative, or rank-based?

Does the word stand against أكثر, أقصى, أكبر, خير, or الآخرة?

Does أدنى compare one thing, or does it present one path as nearer to a result?

Is the ethical judgment present in the verse, or has the translator added it?

Is الدُّنْيَا the adjective of an explicit noun, or is its described noun understood from context?

Four levels must remain distinct:

Base meaning: being near or drawing near.

Criterion of comparison: place, time, amount, rank, or result.

Consequence of nearness: access, presence, immediacy, or greater possibility of realization.

Contextual judgment: better, worse, deceptive, little, or enduring.

Consequence and judgment must not be inserted into the base meaning of the root without evidence.

9. Qur'anic Uses of the Root

Drawing Near

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ
فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ

Then he drew near and came down; so he was at a distance of two bows or nearer.

An-Najm 53:8-9

In these verses, دَنَا states the occurrence of drawing near. فَتَدَلَّىٰ comes from another root and adds a separate image to the sentence. Its meaning should not be placed inside د ن و. أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ continues the comparison of distance: the measure of two bows or nearer. The root itself does not specify whether this nearness was bodily, visual, station-based, or of another kind. That must be examined from the whole context of the surah.

Bringing the Covering Near

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنَاتِكَ وَنِسَاءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلَابِيبِهِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَ

O Prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves from their outer coverings; that is nearer to their being recognized and not harmed.

Al-Ahzab 33:59

In this verse two forms of the root appear: يُدْنِينَ and أَدْنَىٰ. يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ expresses the movement of the covering toward the body or around the body. But the verb alone does not determine the exact form of the garment, the amount of coverage, its color, or the historical manner of wearing it. In the second part, أدنى أن establishes a relation between this action and the intended result: this is nearer to being recognized and not harmed. More suitable is a smoother translation, but its root sense is nearer to the realization of the result.

Near Fruits and Shades

قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٌ

Its fruits to be picked are near.

Al-Haqqah 69:23

The nearness of the fruits makes access to them easy. Yet ease is the result of nearness, not the direct meaning of دانية.

وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيْهِمْ ظِلَالُهَا وَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوفُهَا تَذْلِيلًا

And its shades are near over them, and its fruits have been made completely accessible.

Al-Insan 76:14

In this verse, دانية expresses the nearness of the shades, while ذللت expresses the making of the fruits accessible. The meanings of the two roots should not be merged into one another.

وَجَنَى الْجَنَّتَيْنِ دَانٍ

And the fruit to be gathered from the two gardens is near.

Ar-Rahman 55:54

دان expresses the nearness of the produce. Being within reach is the natural consequence of this nearness.

The Nearer Bank

إِذْ أَنْتُمْ بِالْعُدْوَةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ بِالْعُدْوَةِ الْقُصْوَىٰ وَالرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنْكُمْ

When you were on the nearer bank and they were on the farther bank, and the caravan was lower than you.

Al-Anfal 8:42

This verse is one of the clearest witnesses for the meaning of الدُّنْيَا: الدُّنْيَا stands against الْقُصْوَىٰ, nearer against farther; أَسْفَلَ means lower. The Qur'an uses أسفل for the caravan being lower. Therefore, الدنيا and أسفل are not synonyms in this verse. الْعُدْوَة الدُّنْيَا means the nearer bank, not the low bank.

The Nearest Land

غُلِبَتِ الرُّومُ
فِي أَدْنَى الْأَرْضِ

The Romans were defeated in the nearest land.

Ar-Rum 30:2-3

The direct meaning of أَدْنَى الْأَرْضِ is the nearest or nearer land in relation to the contextual point of reference. Reading it as the lowest point of the earth in elevation is not certain from the expression itself and requires independent evidence. The base translation should avoid turning a geographical theory into certainty: in the nearest land.

Less Than an Amount

وَلَا أَدْنَىٰ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَا أَكْثَرَ إِلَّا هُوَ مَعَهُمْ

And not less than that and not more, except that He is with them.

Al-Mujadilah 58:7

أدنى stands against أكثر. Therefore, in this context it means less. This use shows that being nearer toward the lower side of a numerical scale can become less in translation. But one should not conclude from this use that the root د ن و always means being little.

Near or Slightly Less Than Two Thirds

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَىٰ مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ اللَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ

Your Lord knows that you stand nearly two thirds of the night, and half of it, and a third of it.

Al-Muzzammil 73:20

In this structure, أَدْنَى مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ اللَّيْلِ points to an amount near two thirds or slightly less than it. The final translation must fit the complete structure of the verse. Cautious options are: near two thirds of the night; slightly less than two thirds of the night. A precise mathematical amount should not be extracted from the root alone.

Nearer to the Absence of Doubt

ذَٰلِكُمْ أَقْسَطُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ وَأَقْوَمُ لِلشَّهَادَةِ وَأَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَرْتَابُوا

That is more equitable with The God, more upright for testimony, and nearer to your not falling into doubt.

Al-Baqarah 2:282

أدنى here shows the relation between recording the debt and the intended result. Recording and witnessing are: more equitable; make testimony more upright; and are nearer to preventing doubt. A smoother translation is: and more suitable so that you do not fall into doubt. But it should remain clear that suitable is understood from the structure nearer to the result.

Nearer to Preventing Ta'ulu

ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا

That is nearer to your not ta'ulu.

An-Nisa 4:3

The exact meaning of تعولوا must be examined in the study of the root ع و ل. The root د ن و in this verse only shows the relation between the preceding measure and the result ألا تعولوا. Therefore, disagreement over translating تعولوا should not be placed inside the meaning of أدنى.

Nearer to Proper Performance of Testimony

ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ يَأْتُوا بِالشَّهَادَةِ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِهَا أَوْ يَخَافُوا أَنْ تُرَدَّ أَيْمَانٌ بَعْدَ أَيْمَانِهِمْ

That is nearer to their bringing the testimony upon its proper face, or fearing that oaths may be returned after their oaths.

Al-Maidah 5:108

The preceding legal structure is nearer to the realization of proper testimony. The translation it increases the likelihood of proper testimony is a good contextual explanation, but it is not the direct translation of the word.

Nearer to Calmness and Contentment

ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ تَقَرَّ أَعْيُنُهُنَّ وَلَا يَحْزَنَّ وَيَرْضَيْنَ بِمَا آتَيْتَهُنَّ كُلُّهُنَّ

That is nearer to their eyes becoming calm, their not grieving, and all of them being content with what you have given them.

Al-Ahzab 33:51

أدنى in this verse presents one method as nearer to specific emotional results. More suitable is a natural translation, but the root sense is greater nearness to the realization of the result.

Lower in Comparison with Better

قَالَ أَتَسْتَبْدِلُونَ الَّذِي هُوَ أَدْنَىٰ بِالَّذِي هُوَ خَيْرٌ

He said: Do you exchange that which is lower for that which is better?

Al-Baqarah 2:61

In this verse, أدنى stands opposite خير. This opposition creates a value or quality comparison. Suitable translations are: lower; lesser; less valuable. Still, the verse does not necessarily say that the requested foods are intrinsically forbidden or impure. It speaks of replacing something better with something lower.

A Near and Present Gain

يَأْخُذُونَ عَرَضَ هَٰذَا الْأَدْنَىٰ

They take the gain of this nearer life.

Al-Araf 7:169

هَذَا الْأَدْنَىٰ points to the present and at-hand gain. A smooth translation is: they take the gain of this present life; or: they take the immediate gain of this life. At hand is a result of nearness and presence, not the fixed meaning of every use of أدنى.

The Nearer Punishment

وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُمْ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْأَدْنَىٰ دُونَ الْعَذَابِ الْأَكْبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

And We will surely make them taste from the nearer punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return.

As-Sajdah 32:21

العذاب الأدنى stands against العذاب الأكبر. This punishment may be nearer in time; may occur before the punishment of the Hereafter; or may be lower in rank or intensity. But the verse itself does not specify its exact kind. No event, illness, war, or natural disaster should be declared the certain referent of العذاب الأدنى without a text.

The Life of This World in Contrast with the Hereafter

أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ اشْتَرَوُا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا بِالْآخِرَةِ

Those are the ones who purchased the present life at the price of the Hereafter.

Al-Baqarah 2:86

The main contrast is: الدُّنْيَا: near and present; الآخرة: later. The criticism in the verse comes from the transaction and the wrong preference, not from the present life being intrinsically impure.

Preferring the Present Life

فَأَمَّا مَنْ طَغَىٰ
وَآثَرَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا
فَإِنَّ الْجَحِيمَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ

As for the one who transgressed and preferred the present life, then Hellfire is the dwelling.

An-Naziat 79:37-39

The factor of condemnation is the full structure of the verse: transgression; preferring worldly life; and ignoring the outcome. The present life itself is not the object of absolute condemnation.

بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا
وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ

Rather, you prefer the present life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring.

Al-Ala 87:16-17

The verse expresses value through separate words: this life is the present life; the Hereafter is better and more enduring. This structure shows that better and more enduring are not inside the meaning of Hereafter, just as low is not inside the meaning of dunyā.

The Small Enjoyment of This Life

قُلْ مَتَاعُ الدُّنْيَا قَلِيلٌ وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ

Say: the enjoyment of this life is little, and the Hereafter is better for whoever has taqwa.

An-Nisa 4:77

قليل expresses the smallness of the enjoyment of this life. If الدُّنْيَا itself is translated as low and little life, the role of قليل in the verse is weakened.

A Deceptive Enjoyment

وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ

The present life is nothing but a deceptive enjoyment.

Ali Imran 3:185

غرور expresses the deceptive nature of this enjoyment. الدنيا itself does not mean deception. Deception arises from how the human being sees and uses the present life. Something present and tangible can draw more attention, but this is a contextual reflection, not the lexical definition of the root.

Pure Provisions in the Present Life

قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِ وَالطَّيِّبَاتِ مِنَ الرِّزْقِ قُلْ هِيَ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا خَالِصَةً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Say: Who has forbidden the adornment of The God that He brought forth for His servants, and the pure things of provision? Say: they are for those who have faith in the present life, and exclusively for them on the Day of Rising.

Al-Araf 7:32

This verse shows that the worldly life is not intrinsically impure and condemned. Adornment and pure provision can exist in this very life. What is condemned is baseless forbidding, excess, oppression, and heedlessness.

Good in This Life and the Hereafter

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Our Lord, give us good in this life and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Al-Baqarah 2:201

This supplication shows that asking for good in this life is not incompatible with a Hereafter-oriented direction. The Qur'an does not call the human being to despise the present life; it calls him to seek the good of this life in connection with the good of the Hereafter.

The Standing of Jesus in This Life and the Hereafter

وَجِيهًا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَمِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ

Honored in this life and the Hereafter, and among those brought near.

Ali Imran 3:45

This verse also shows that دنيا by itself does not mean low and vile. Jesus is introduced as having an honored standing in this life and the Hereafter.

Help in the Present Life

إِنَّا لَنَنْصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْأَشْهَادُ

We surely help Our messengers and those who have faith in the present life and on the day when the witnesses rise.

Ghafir 40:51

This life is the field in which help is realized. This use does not fit an intrinsic translation of dunya as low life.

The Nearer Sky

إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ الْكَوَاكِبِ

We adorned the nearer sky with the adornment of the stars.

As-Saffat 37:6

وَزَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ وَحِفْظًا

And We adorned the nearer sky with lamps and protection.

Fussilat 41:12

وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ

And We have certainly adorned the nearer sky with lamps.

Al-Mulk 67:5

السَّمَاء الدُّنْيَا means the nearer sky or the nearest sky in relation to the earthly observer. This expression should not be turned into a definitive model of the physical structure of the skies. The nature of the seven skies and the exact relation of the lamps to them require caution.

10. Examination of Important Derivatives

دَنَا

The verb of drawing near. It states the occurrence of a decrease in distance, but its type and quality must be understood from context.

يُدْنِينَ

A verb from Form IV, meaning to bring near. In al-Ahzab 33:59, women bring their coverings near over themselves or draw them down over themselves.

دَانٍ

An active participle meaning near. In ar-Rahman 55:54 it is used for the fruit of the two gardens.

دَانِيَة

The feminine form of دَانٍ. It appears in al-Haqqah 69:23 for fruits and in al-Insan 76:14 for shades.

أَدْنَى

The comparative form. Its meaning is determined according to the criterion of comparison: place: nearer; amount: less; rank: lower; time: earlier or nearer; result: more suitable or nearer to realization.

الدُّنْيَا

The feminine form of أَدْنَى. In the Qur'an it can describe different nouns: الحياة الدنيا; السماء الدنيا; العدوة الدنيا. Thus dunyā is not always an independent name for the material world; at times it is an adjective for something nearer in relation to a point of reference.

11. Grammatical and Structural Notes

دَنَا

The verb دنا can express drawing near, and the side toward which nearness occurs is known from the context or sentence structure.

أَدْنَى مِنْ

This structure introduces the criterion of comparison: وَلَا أَدْنَىٰ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ. Here ذلك is the measure.

أَدْنَى أَنْ

This structure expresses the relation between a path and its result: أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَرْتَابُوا; أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا; أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ يَأْتُوا بِالشَّهَادَةِ; أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ تَقَرَّ أَعْيُنُهُنَّ; أَدْنَىٰ أَنْ يُعْرَفْنَ. In English it can be translated according to context as: nearer to; more suitable for.

الدنيا as an adjective

In these constructions, الدنيا is a feminine adjective: الحياة الدنيا; السماء الدنيا; العدوة الدنيا. Translation must preserve the relation between adjective and described noun.

الدنيا with an omitted described noun

In expressions such as فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ, the word الحياة or the stage of life is understood from context.

The contrast between dunyā and ākhirah

At the lexical level: الدنيا: nearer and more present; الآخرة: later. Judgments such as better, more enduring, and little are expressed with separate words.

12. د ن و Compared with Nearby Roots

د ن و and ق ر ب

Both are connected with nearness, and there is overlap between them. ق ر ب has a wide field of spatial nearness, kinship, drawing near, and nearness in station. د ن و in its Qur'anic uses shows attention to decreasing distance, being nearer, being present, and becoming accessible. This is a tendency, not an absolute boundary.

د ن و and ز ل ف

ز ل ف is also connected with drawing near and bringing near. In the Qur'an, this root in some contexts accompanies temporal or station-based nearness. د ن و has also expanded in its uses to spatial comparison, quantitative comparison, and access. The two should neither be made completely synonymous nor completely separate.

د ن و and س ف ل

س ف ل denotes being low or placed lower. د ن و in some contexts can be translated lower, but this meaning comes from the type of comparison. In al-Anfal 8:42, الدنيا is used for nearer and أسفل for lower. This witness shows that the two roots do not mean the same thing. Also, س ف ل itself does not always express moral decline; being lower can be merely spatial or rank-based.

د ن و and ع ج ل

ع ج ل focuses on haste, rushing, or bringing something forward. د ن و in الدُّنْيَا denotes being near and present. Something present may be desired sooner, but haste is not the direct meaning of د ن و.

د ن و and ق ل ل

ق ل ل denotes being little. أدنى in some structures means less, but through comparison with a higher amount. These two fields overlap in some contexts, but they are not identical.

د ن و and د ن أ

د ن و is connected with nearness. The hamzated د ن أ belongs to the field of baseness and vileness. The two should not be mixed merely because of similarity in writing and sound.

13. الدنيا: The Near and Present Life

The word الدُّنْيَا is one of the most important forms of this root.

In الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا, life is described as a near and present stage, the stage that the human being is now experiencing.

The human being:

sees it;

feels its effects directly;

experiences its benefit and harm sooner;

has its adornments present before him.

For this reason, the life of this world can attract human attention more than the Hereafter. But this is a psychological and ethical result of its presence, not the lexical meaning of the word itself.

The present life in the Qur'an is both a field of deception and a field of action.

In this very life the human being can:

have faith;

repent;

establish justice;

give zakat;

leave oppression;

gain knowledge and awareness;

send forth righteous work for his Hereafter.

Thus the world is neither intrinsically the enemy of the human being, nor should it become his final destination instead of the Hereafter.

14. Lower: Base Meaning or Contextual Meaning?

Lower is one possible translation of أَدْنَى, but it is not the fixed meaning of the root.

In al-Baqarah 2:61, the opposition of أدنى with خير creates a value comparison.

In as-Sajdah 32:21, the opposition of العذاب الأدنى with العذاب الأكبر shows difference in rank, time, or intensity.

In al-Mujadilah 58:7, the opposition of أدنى with أكثر creates a quantitative comparison.

In al-Anfal 8:42, the opposition of الدنيا with القصوى is spatial comparison.

The exact meaning therefore comes from three factors:

the root itself;

the morphological and grammatical structure;

the oppositions and context of the verse.

One semantic branch must not be imposed on all uses.

15. Dunyā and Ākhirah

The contrast between dunyā and ākhirah is one of the fundamental contrasts of the Qur'an.

At the lexical level:

الدنيا: nearer and more present;

الآخرة: later.

At the value level, the Qur'an explains:

the Hereafter is better;

the Hereafter is more enduring;

the enjoyment of this life is little;

the worldly life can become a deceptive enjoyment;

the abode of the Hereafter has true and enduring life.

These judgments must remain in their places.

If dunyā is translated from the beginning as low and worthless life, the structure of Qur'anic argument is lost. The Qur'an first introduces two stages, and then explains their ethical and value relation.

The nearness of dunyā can become a source of heedlessness, but this same nearness is also the opportunity of responsibility and reform.

18. Conclusion

The root د ن و in the Qur'an denotes being near, drawing near, or bringing near.

This nearness can appear in different fields:

spatial drawing near in دَنَا;

bringing near in يُدْنِينَ;

being near and within reach in دَانٍ and دَانِيَة;

being nearer in أَدْنَى;

being less in quantitative comparison;

being lower in rank-based or value comparison;

one path being nearer to a specific result in أَدْنَى أَنْ;

the present life in الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا;

the nearer sky in السَّمَاء الدُّنْيَا;

the nearer bank in الْعُدْوَة الدُّنْيَا.

The most important results of this study are:

الدنيا in its base meaning does not mean low, vile, or impure;

الحياة الدنيا is the present and near life in contrast with the Hereafter;

the critique of dunyā arises from preferring it over the Hereafter, being deceived by its adornment, and treating it as the final goal;

the Qur'an also recognizes good, help, pure provision, and honored standing in this life;

أدنى is not always lower and may mean nearer, less, lower, earlier, or more suitable;

the meaning of each use is known from the criterion of comparison, grammatical structure, and context of the verse;

السماء الدنيا is the nearer sky, not the low sky;

العدوة الدنيا is the nearer bank;

العذاب الأدنى is the nearer or earlier punishment in contrast with the greater punishment;

being present and at hand is the consequence of some uses of nearness, not the fixed definition of all derivatives.

The final definition of the root is:

د ن و denotes being near, drawing near, or bringing near. According to context, this nearness may be spatial, temporal, quantitative, rank-based, or result-oriented, and it can produce meanings such as nearer, less, lower, more present, or more accessible. الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا is the present and near life in contrast with the Hereafter; its value or critique is known from the full structure of the verses and from the human being's relation to it, not from the root by itself.
